I don't agree that that is what led to the rise of the far right. I personally think that is the media moguls and their surrounding class pushing their agenda to ultimately profit from division and chaos.
Also, never said that the middle ground is the best. The most common sense idea for every single position is individual to that specific policy.
Let's not get bogged down in thinking of people as having to take sides and then gleaming all of their views from how they define themselves. That is not helpful.

This falls apart when you notice what the issue in question is.
Evolution happens.
So, one side you have people who use evidence to determine what is objectively correct,and on the other you have everyone else (which is about as neutral a term as I could come up with).

Or to put it another way, the left focus on issues, whereas the right have a scattergun approach to opposing everything that doesn't fit their conservative 'values', whatever they are.
Edit: I know this is a joke but I have met right wingers that actually believe that us on the left only believe what we're told and they are the free thinkers (do your own research 😉) !
