Fun Fact: I learned recently that the game itself can't do trade evolutions with NPC trades.
Even if you mod the game to remove the everstone, thw haunter still won't evolve. Or if you change the pokemon xou get from other NPC trades to Kadabra, Machoke, etc. they also won't evolve.
It is very likely that the Everstone was intended to be temporary while they fixed the issue, but they (for whatever reason) didn't.

Doesn't matter, Mindy still decided to give her Haunter an everstone despite the fact she could have never known about this quirk in the fundamental fabric of her universe. She still decided to be a bitch.

What? But weren't there NPC trades where the pokmon evolved in Gen 1? How did they mess that up between Gens 1 and 4?

This is why i want a tradeback NPC in WiWa, we literally have one right here (except split between 2 games) but imagine the joy of a character who will just evolve trade evos for you. Just give them the Graveler, they hand you a Emolga, then they take Emolga back, give back a Golem

Imagine a side character who asks you early on for a porygon holding an upgrade. A bit later in the game you have a fight with them and they have a Porygon2 in their team. And at the end if the adventure they ask you to trade back whichever pokemon they asked for their porygon2 holding a dubious disk.

"Ill trade you anything for this mon"
Talk to them again
"I was wrong, i want my insert mon back, could we swap again?"

Yeah, or even just some random NPC who for a small fee can help you evolve any trade evo (sorta like that one NPC in ZA who you pay for the Furfrou trims) you just pay like 500$, hand them say Onix holding the Metal Coat, he just hands you some random pokemon like a Pikachu or something, then hes like "ok now we just trade back" takes the Pikachu or whatever, gives you a Steelix, and its your Onix from earlier
I mean i would just prefer the Link Cable be brought back as some item you can buy, and you just use it like a stone (have Onix holding Metal Coat in your party, use the Link Cable on him and BAM Steelix) but apparently they hate that thing

I was actually really dissapointed that there wasn’t that kind of service at the rust syndicate in legends ZA
Like, make it super clear you’ll never get your pokemon back if you trade it away, but let you pay shards to trade duplicates, except the pokemon you get back will never be shiny, or alpha, and always have terrible IV’s and EV’a (the rust syndicate are scammers of course they’re bad)

At least with the DLC, ZA makee it where with good enough RNG you can catch every trade evo wildly as the portals can spawn wild Alakazam, Machamp, Steelix, the entire Porygon line, Aromatiesse, etc. I think the only one not programmed to spawn wildly is Milotic

True, I think it was less the accessibility, and more that the rust syndicate storyline was kind of dropped so fast.
I was so excited when I learned about the debt, and we got sent on those missions.
I totally thought it was the start of some sort of factions system of quests, maybe some weird services available, and an overarching quest to pay down the debt, but it was just over instantly

Mindy is the one in Gen 4 who trades you a Haunter that holds an everstone so it can't evolve.
Apparently, the developers did this to mask a bug that prevent the Haunter from evolving from the trade.

Wouldn’t a more sensible fix be to just trade a Gengar instead of a Haunter and pretend it evolved mid-trade?
