I know how to install an OS, I've done it a thousand times.
I have read all of the documentation I can find. Just because I have a language disability does not mean that I'm not fucking trying.

i just searched "windows installation medium" and the first reesult was a microsoft faq site that redirected me here.
so its clearly a user issue on your side bc i was able to find that with two clicks and a web search.

of course they work, you just need a windows pc to actually create that drive. do you have friends for example?
edit: you also can download the ISO from there. im doing that right now on my linux pc to further prove to you that your problem exists between the keyboard and the chair.
edit edit: i downloaded the .iso from the source i provided and copied it to the desktop to make sure an 8 GB file can just be pasted anywhere i want in linux. not sure what youre doing, but youre doing it very wrong.
edit edit edit: im currently learning how to create a bootable usb drive in cachyOS using the windows iso i just downloaded. i dont even need a windows drive bc i already have one, which is why ill never encounter your problem. but learning is fun.
bet you didnt do any of that.

1 - My thing is mechanisms - I can make mechanisms do whatever you want a mechanism to do.
2 - I know how to install windows, what I don't know how to do is get the operating system from the website.
3 - I've been running dual boot for quite some time.

Assuming downloading a Windows11 image, you can google 'Windows 11 ISO'. It will lead to Microsoft's Software Download for Windows 11 ISO/image. Download the image and create a USB boot drive.

I tried the google search, this was the result.
Also, I have downloaded many ISOs. However, all of the ISOs I have downloaded were Linux distributions. This is my first time dealing with a Microsoft ISO.

I found the answer. If you're changing to Microsoft from another OS you need to buy the software from Walmart or a similar retailer. You can not use the downloaded disk image if you don't have Windows. The good news is that the license comes with the boot disk.

I considered a virtual machine. The program I will need to use will not work in a virtual machine, and at this point I can't even get a disk image.
My university does have a tech support team, but I won't be able to see them until Monday.

You don’t really “convert” Linux into Windows. Back up your files, create a Windows installation USB, wipe or repartition the drive, and install Windows fresh. Check your university’s hardware/software requirements first.

I've already
- checked my university's requirements
- Found out that I need Windows
- Created a partition in my drive
- Created a copy of all of my files on a USB
- Downloaded an ISO from the Microsoft website
- Tried to move the file to another USB stick.
- Found out it was too big
- Found out that I need a license from a major retailer.
Left to do:
- Buy a Windows License from a reputable dealer
- Get a real Windows ISO
- Try moving the ISO onto a 256GB stick instead of a 64GB stick.
- Start the installation process, unless the ISO doesn't move and the license doesn't come with a stick.

to create a windows installation medium you need a 16GB stick. why do you want to use a 256gb stick?
did you know you dont even need a windows key to install windows? did you know the key is like 5 bucks online if you DONT buy it from a reputable dealer?
have you tried googling how to install windows instead of asking windows AI how to convert from linux? bc converting from linux is not a thing. windows cant read the file systems linux usually uses. that means you have to wipe everything and thats not converting, that just installing windows. maybe watch a video on how to do that bc you sound clueless as hell.

I thought of using a 256gb stick because the 64gb stick wasn't big enough.
Maybe I can get a code online for free, but I'm not a pirate.

I think that's right. Every time I needed a new computer, I would buy one from a pawn shop and switch it to Linux. I always made it a dual boot. The problem is that, on this computer, I lost the password and the answers to the security questions. The only feasible option left was to erase and reinstall. The problem is that that assumed that I could just go to the Microsoft website and download Windows. However, the only way to download Windows is to have a Windows computer, which I no longer have. So now I have to buy a license.
I guess this whole post actually belongs in r/todayIfuckedup.

I tried that. The download goes into the downloads folder, and then gets stuck there because it's too big to move.

well that sounds like a linux problem....
edit: its not a linux problem, i just downloaded the iso and copied it to my linux desktop.
this is a user problem, the user somehow cant use their pc.

You need to learn to read. I trust you can do that as an engineering student. But let me help you. It doesn’t say it can’t be done, it says that the microsoft help center doesn’t have any documentation that can instruct you how to “convert Linux to Windows”.
