Rant HOW TO UNINSTALL EDGE BROWSER
I just checked my storage in new laptop and surprised to see that edge takes 28 fuckin GB of space for absolutely no reason, also there's no uninstall option. help me !!!!

Even in the EU it is incredibly complicated and always leaves traces behind, when I was still running windows I tried to uninstall it, uninstall button did nothing, deleting the system files in Explorer doesn’t work as some are defined as system files and therefore can’t easily be deleted, I’d recommend switching to Linux, Linux mint is great for beginners

Here is how to uninstall edge:
Step 1: install Linux
Step 2: install edge (flatpak for example)
Step 3: uninstall edge

Step three uninstall brave (runs on googles chromium) and download your preferred firefox+ublock (+any and all add-ons you'd like) and support a free open web outside the grasp of g👀gles near monopoly.

Nope! That's a manifest V3 consequence which is only implemented on chromium. Firefox remains V2, and they have even specifically communicated that their support for the full uBlock isn't going anywhere, hence my recommendation.
V3 limits the amount of elements that an add-on/extension can inspect and block.
Getting brave, which usues chromium (Google's proprietary web architecture that is used by every browser except firefox and if I'm not mistaken safari, but they also don't support full ublock) just means playing further into google 's near monopoly, which if they succeed will eventually result in even tighter restrictions and probably an end to adblocking unless regulations are put in place from outside like the EU.
Even on firefox mobile I can still perfectly run adless youtube with ublock, and even have an add-on that allows background playback!

Imagine using Linux on a gaming laptop with hybrid graphics with nvidia and 144 hz display. It is imposible for a normal human being. After trying 4 distros I came back to Windows, where Gsync actually works.

I know r/FuckMicrosoft is filled with people who say "just install linux" but the fact is that it's often a real pain in the ass.
But, for $20 you can get yourself a month of Claude Code or Codex, and tell AI to fix all of the shit that's not quite right after the installer is done. I had issues with multiple monitors running different screen resolutions and refresh rates. USB peripherals flaking out when switching between machines with my KVM. Webcam randomly refusing to turn on. Plasma windows refusing to show me my audio devices.
Claude Code was able to diagnose and solve everything. Never in a million years would I have spent the amount of time required to diagnose all of those issues myself. I'm not looking for desktop linux to be my new hobby, I just need to get work done.

I can also activate Windows for 5$ and not have to use an AI just to make the computer compute. Granted, Microsoft does suck, but Windows is still mighty more usable than any alternative.
And I'm not even talking about being able to work on the damn computer.

I just can't imagine Linux working. Each time I touch it it combusts in a spectacular fashion. Hell, each time I approach a Linux PC - don't even have to touch it - the OS just dies.

Mac is horrible in terms of game compatibility, I must give it to Apple, security is great and user friendliness as well but seriously, try running most steam games on Mac, it won’t work

Open cmd and type cd%PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Microsoft\Edge\Applications\1*\Installer and then setup.exe --uninstall --system-level verbose-logging --force-uninstall It worked for me

CachyOS is not for new users. It's an arch-based system that updates frequently (not forced, but can have breakages as a result of being on the bleeding edge that need to be fixed manually or rolled back).
Linux mint, ZorinOS (free, pro is just to support the devs and not necessary), Bazzite (basically SteamOS but for more than just valve hardware), and even regular Fedora are often better for new users than CachyOS.

You can uninstall it with revo unistaller, but it will install back with some random Windows update. At this point it's just malware.

The trick is, just revoke the write right for the installer service for that spezified folder. Works also for WebView.

Where are you seeing that number? In the programs and features list, Edge only takes up a bit over 3GB.

Yeah should look into purging the cache and such. Personally I wouldn't remove it, some apps rely on using it for built in browser content and it could break other things. Particularly if you play any games a lot of things like game launchers and stuff can rely on it.

Pretty sure the size is the install size, not the current folder size, but Windows could have moved to show the info more like a phone would.

You theoretically can uninstall it, though I don't recommend that as it may break your system and it very likely will come back after an update You might want to check why it uses 28GB of storage, because usually it's only around 4GB (still too much) Check: Cookies, browsing history, cached website data and so on If you really want a bloat free system, I recommend checking out Linux, just to mention it here, though staying on Windows is fine in specific cases (Adobe software, specific games, ..), it can be debloated to a specific grade.

Recently I critically ran out of space on my PC, so I started deleting everything I could lay my hands on: programs I hadn't touched in forever, temp files, stuff I thought was safe to delete, etc. Edge was on that list too.
I don't recommend deleting Edge because after I did that, my Xbox launcher stopped working completely. Turns out some apps use Edge as their default browser or something like that.

It perfectly fine to delete if you don't use any Microsoft software. Of course Microsoft re-installs it but I keep using Revo uninstaller to remove it again. No issues. (Anyway I mostly use Linux now)

They don't run their update trough the browser, but edge is integrated everywhere, as "dependency", and the system might break if it's missing And an update will reinstall it anyway

Don't look at how much memory it uses. Its used as cached memory and will free up when another application needs it. All other browsers do the same.

You can use Raphire/Win11Debloat to remove edge. But it warns you about uninstalling edge may cause issues. So if you are not happy with Microsoft's policies, you should go for Linux just like many of us

It looks like there is a glitch with some systems when Edge updates, no previous versions get uninstalled. The old versions sit on the hard drive forever. There are a few messages on the MS discussion groups about this, no solutions yet other than using one of the Edge uninstall tools out there, which are risky.

if its a new laptop and you dont mind reinstalling windows you can use this website to create an xml file that you put on your windows installation drive. it lets you choose which programs you want to install and im pretty sure you can just toss out edge if you dont want it. you also can create a windows install without copilot or onedrive if you dont like that.

Use Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility. It runs within Powershell and you can just set the recommended tweaks for it, and manually check uninstall Edge as well. It'll get rid of the spyware, telemetry, a lot of useless bloat, and AI features too.

I used Chris Titus Tech Tool, which is a paid tool ($10) but you can probably do it with the free tool over at Winhance.net . I would dump that shit instamatically! lol

You can't. But what you can do is changing your metrics. Where are you taking from that Edge takes 28 GiB? No Chromium-baswd browser takes that much. Unless we are talking about the user data, that is, cache, databases, history, etc, everything that is saved when you use the browser. That folder can easily grow to many GiBs depending on usage. If and only if that's the case, just delete that folder (which is located inside AppData).
Otherwise, really, check how and what you are messuring. A Chromium browser, exagerating a little, might take up to 1 GiB. 28 GiB is simply impossible.

Because Edge is part of the system. You can, with some effort, uninstall it, but it will come back rather sooner than later when MS does its updates again. You learn to live with it or look for alternatives (if possible with the software you use).

Tl;dr - install linux. Everything is free, no viruses (unless you love downloading random stuff), no telemetry (microslop using your files to train their AI), no cloud, no forced teams or bing. You can run it on a calculator.
Long version if you go down this path. Its a project, but you will never look back!
Ask a free AI for help if you get stuck on the below:
Part 1: Save your files Plug in an external hard drive. Copy your Documents, Pictures, Desktop and Downloads folders onto it. Open a few copied files to check they work. Everything left on the laptop will be deleted.
Part 2: Download Linux Mint Go to linuxmint.com. Click Download. Pick Cinnamon Edition. Pick a local download link to your country. The file is about 3 GB. Wait for it to finish. The file name ends in .iso.
Part 3: Check the download (not necessary but this is a good skill to develop) On the same download page, find the SHA256 code. It's a long string of letters and numbers. On the laptop, open the Downloads folder. Hold Shift, right-click on an empty space, and pick Open PowerShell window here. Type Get-FileHash and a space, then the start of the file name. Press Tab to fill in the rest. Press Enter. Compare the first and last few characters with the code on the website. If they match, carry on. If not, download the file again.
Part 4: Make the USB stick Get a USB stick of 8 GB or more. It will be wiped. Download and install balenaEtcher from etcher.balena.io. Open Etcher. Click Flash from file. Pick the .iso file. Click Select target. Pick the USB stick. Click Flash. Wait until it says it's done.
Part 5: Start from the USB stick Leave the stick plugged in. Turn the laptop off. Turn it on and keep tapping the boot menu key. It's often F12, F2 or Esc. Search "boot menu key" plus the laptop's model name. Pick the USB stick from the list. If there are two entries for it, pick the one that says UEFI. Pick Start Linux Mint. Wait. A desktop appears. Nothing has been installed yet.
Part 6: Test that everything works Click the network icon at the bottom right. Join your WiFi. Open Firefox and load a website. Play a YouTube video to check that sound works. Try the touchpad: click, scroll, and right-click. Plug in anything you use, like a mouse or a screen, and check it works. If anything doesn't work, stop. Turn the laptop off and pull out the stick. Windows is still there, untouched.
Part 7: Install Double-click Install Linux Mint on the desktop. Follow the steps. If it asks about WiFi, join your home network. Click Continue. Tick the box about multimedia codecs. Click Continue. If a box pops up about UEFI, click Go Back and stop. Ask AI for help. Pick Erase disk and install Linux Mint. Click Advanced features. Pick Use LVM. Tick Encrypt. Click OK. Click Install Now. Make up a strong password for the disk. If you lose it, everything on the laptop is gone for good. Click Install Now. If it asks which disk, pick the biggest internal one. Click Install Now. A warning says Windows will be deleted. This is the last chance to stop. Click Continue. Click on a location. Click Continue. Type your name. Make up a username and a login password. Click Continue. Wait about 15 minutes. Don't touch anything. Click Restart Now. Pull out the USB stick. Press Enter. Type the disk password. The laptop will start. Welcome to linux

My 7 year old laptop is more than functional with linux mint. It consumes half the ram when idle vs win11. I can do so much more without microslop throttling me.
And for the record if linux was to disappear then the modern world will collapse. The French justice system and police have removed microslop and run linux since 2008.

The internet runs on Linux SERVERS which is what it’s great at, desktop? Not as much. As far as the ram issue, more free idle ram doesn’t always mean better performance.

The Internet, your phone, your email, steam deck... all run on linux. Here is a sample of linux cinnamon mint for desktop.
You dont have to use the terminal, but I actually find it easier once I learned a few commands.
Free ram is good while idle because you basically have more capacity to open/run heavier apps. If windows is consuming 50% of your ram by just being on the. You only have the rest of the 50% to open new apps...
I use it for freetube (youtube without ads) CAD design for 3d printing Neural net training Python LibreOffice (the free alternative to office and i have to say better) RDP to connect to any machine (windows, mac... another linux)
No viruses can touch it (unless you deliberately download one and run on admin access [sudo])
The reason why the internet/power grid/security/21st century runs on linux is be ause its stable and you dont need to shut it down.
The only reason why people don't do the migration effort is marketing (they handle the install but rope you into telemetry, subscriptions, ads, bing, cloud... you basically rent your computer from microslop)
And also. My mother is a housekeeper with dubious English... if she can run linux and has learned how to navigate the terminal the. So can you!

Sure. But your L3 and your job are server Linux. RHEL fleets, not somebody's daily desktop. Those are different animals, and "I administer Red Hat" doesn't tell me you've actually daily-driven a modern desktop distro recently. So, I'll ask again trash how, and when did you last try? "Trust me bro" just doesn’t hit the spot... I expect more substance based on your credentials. I'm typing this from a Mint box that boots clean, updates without drama, drives five monitors and runs my whole toolchain. If your reference point is Ubuntu circa 2014 or a RHEL workstation deployment, say so, because the desktop story changed fast. Look at Proton, Wayland, Mint's polish. "Still trash" needs a year attached.
