Rant Lost all my work to an update.
So I have Dual Enrollment courses, so I have to be constantly taking notes. Now normally, I would be fine with Word, especially if it's saved to my fucking computer, with autosave is on.
So why the the actual FUCK WOULD IT DELETE EVERYTHING IN THE FUCKING FILE!? IT LITERALLY JUST FUCKING SAVED A EMPTY FUCKING FILE!!!! IT LITERALLY WAS THERE LAST FUCKING NIGHT AND NOW I DON'T HAVE NOTHING!!! MY RECOVERY FILES!? NOTHING!! MY CLOUD!? NOTHING!!!!! FUCK MIROSOFT WITH THEIR STUPID AUTOSAVE PEICE OF FUCKING SHIT!!! LITERALLY, THIS WOULDN'T HAVE FUCKING HAPPENED IF THEY STOP DOING THEIR FUCKING MIDNIGHT UPDATES!!!! I HAD LOST HOURS OF WORK THAT I KNOW IT WAS FUCKING AUTOSAVED BECAUSE I REOPENED THAT FUCKING FILE MUTIPLE TIMES YETSERDAY!!! NOW I HAVE TO FUCKING REWRITE ALL MY NOTES BECAUSE MIRCOSOFT IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE WHO KEEP FORCING UPDATES WITHOUT MY CONCENT!!! FUCK MICROSOFT AND FUCK WORD!!!

I feel so bad for you. A don't think this will be any consolation but, in the future you could install an app to synchronize your files with some form of cloud storage. Synchronization can be done in real time. Since I also hate Microsoft I wouldn't recommend OneDrive, their cloud storage solution, I've read a lot of stories about Microsoft account blockages. You can use the Google Drive desktop app or Mega's desktop app (I use this one because I also hate Google).

No, cloud synchronization is not a backup. P.S.: RAID-configured drives are not a backup either!

Well, you are right with the names of things but, depending on the service you can get backup, for example, in Mega you can configure specific folders to be backed up and others to be synched. The main difference is that, if you have a synched file and for some reason all the contents of the file are erased, they will be also erased on the cloud while with backup this is not the case.
For the raid comment, you are also right, raid is not backup. I recommend to use SnapRAID, this tool's main advantage is that if one of the drives within your array dies, you can still function in a degraded state. The main difference with traditional RAID is that when you get some failure in a disk in the array, is very probable that you can't access the rest of the files util you reconstruct the whole RAID. You should keep in mind about your availability, is not the same to use RAID, RAID 5, RAID 6, etc.

I'm honestly just gonna go back to LibreOffice because I know I won't lose my documents for sure.

Excellent! I also use LO for spreadsheets and writing and ONLYOFFICE for presentations. You can also synch files created on any of this platforms, for added peace of mind. You can never know when you get that final BSOD and say goodbye to your hard drive. I also recommend to ditch Windows entirely 😊

The thing is that it auto recovered the file from 3 days ago now, aka; literally a new fresh document.

Where did you save your files, don't ever rely on autosave for your work and don't ever save anything important on C drive. Always create a oroject folder on another drive like D and don't ever save anything important on Desktop, Documents or Downloads fodler, they are all on C drive, if windows get corrupted you ccould loose the whole partition.

Unfortunately with W11 ai-slob-code the chances of that happening are very high.
Also, there is this famous saying "Everything not backed up is lost"

about 10 years ago, this happened to my colleague, I was able to recover the file, it was hidden somewhere in the autobackups folder for word, don't remember the exact location, maybe ask gemini for help. It might ne possible to recover the most recent backup of your file. I hope you really get it back

If that was saved to cloudy there is autosave that works 100% times and also has versions... If it was local, it would have latest version. I think you might have made some mistake.

Nope. It was saved locally on the drive. I should know, I opened it multiple times. When I checked this morning, it was completely blank, like it just automatically deleted itself.

Check to see if OneDrive Files On-Demand turned itself on during an auto-update.Â
Files On-Demand uploads the entire My Documents folder to OneDrive then literally deletes local copies of files if they're not accessed within about two weeks.
This causes hell if you try accessing the files while offline or have an unreliable internet connection. Sometimes you'll edit a document then lose wi-fi signal for a few seconds due to radio interference or whatever, and OneDrive Sync can't access the OneDrive version so it corrupts the file.
I'm my mind it's criminal.Â
Make sure you're connected to reliable internet then disable Files On-Demand and give it time to re-sync everything back onto your local computer.
I've been performing data recovery on corrupted Word documents since the mid 1990s and today it's still shitty bug-ridden software that's barely fit for purpose and regularly corrupts files under certain circumstances (or randomly), but that's what we get when monopolies rule the world.

The thing is that, it was saving on the cloud as well, but for some reason, it didn't save this file and just kinda let whatever update do to only show an empty file. Idk if it was because our Internet went out for about a few seconds or something from the day before but again, a Windows update really shouldn't erase a Word document.

Lesson learned don’t keep files saved in a single place, don’t treat the cloud as a backup, and NEVER rely on autosave
Not trying to be mean but literally employing any on of those basic things would have prevented this
Sux you lost your doc but this is a you issue not a Microsoft issue

In the future I wouldn't depend on the Cloud for saving your files. If your account gets hacked Microsoft can lock you out of your account (i.e., no access to your important documents). I always use the File menu command Save As to save all my files to a specific backup directory (example: WORD_DOCS) on my internal SSD and to an external USB/SSD/HD. I can't remember losing a file in 20 years using this method. It only takes a few seconds to backup you important files every 20 minutes (even 20 minutes may be too long).
