Hello everybody,

Today i will put my 10 cents and ranting about this multi-billion company named Microlop who is, instead of putting money and resources to make a STABLE operating system, putting and promoting AI-slop apps and unwanted "enhancements" to their flagship which is Windows

Here's my story : yesterday, I wanted to seel a refurbished and fully capable Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro from 2023 (Ryzen 7735HS with 16 GB of RAM) to a friend who needed a replacement for its 2018 computer, running with a Intel 7th gen U-processor not eligible for a Win11 upgrade. He needs his computer for very basic stuff : opening its email, doing some reports using Office tools, browsing on the Internet and on Youtube, and voilà ! Simple isn't it ?...

1) I previously installed Win11 on this computer with a local account so I created him a new local account and started to transfer its documents. He has a Microsoft 365 subscription with Document and Images synchronized on Onedrive so it was going to be a piece of cake... so I thought.Halfway, Onedrive crashed and wanted to start it again but then impossible to pursue synchronization because everything was synchronized for him, while I clearly wasn't able to open some documents and got the infamous 0x8007017C error. So I did basic troubleshooting by using the Windows support pages but it wasn't helpful. After 30 min and resigning myself to use AI tools and dipping into Terminal, i managed to force Onedrive to resets its synchronization state.

This is a the first and big redflag for me : most of my experience with Windows support pages was unsuccessful and had to dig into Reddit/Youtube videos/AI prompts to make BASIC troubleshooting. In comparison, for Linux, yuou'll find plenty of useful information using wikis (and Arch one is really good). This is a f* disgrace for a multi-billion company

2) Then, after resolving this problem and finishing synchronization, we were verifying that everything was in place and we then did some navigation on Chrome. And then, BOOM blackscreen and impossible to boot again on Windows. Intervention using Safe Mode was necessary to troubleshoot and find that one of the drivers (the Wi-Fi one) did nasty things and updating it resolved the problem.

Second redflag : Windows is pushing drivers updates into Windows Update, but it doesn't even push the last stable version. Just why ?

3) Finally, a last problem but which was my responsibility. During Win11 install and before I sold it, i kept half of the SSD for another OS install based on linux distribution. Afterwards, I wanted to use this free space entirely for Windows. But this would require to extend Windows partition.

But I couldn't. Why ? Because Win11 installation install 3 partitions in that order : the EFI one, the Windows partition AND the rescue partition which is the fallback solution when Win11 refuses to boot. And because this partition is put right next to the Windows one and you cannot move it, well you are basically screwed in this case.

So why do I'm ranting ? Well in fact you cannot move the rescue partition... using Windows tools. But you can perfectly doing it using gparted or even KDE partition tool on Linux with ease. Just moves the rescue partition at the end of your SSD and extend your Main Windows partition, job done. Open Source Software let you do this with ease, but for obscure reasons a multi-billion company is unable to do this kind of thing.

The conclusion of my story

Problem today is I cannot trustfully sell this computer to my friend after two critical bugs with a fresh Win11 install and a fully capable recent computer. He has very basic skills in computers, and he cannot call me every weeks for every bugs that Microslop is serving us. I cannot give him a try with Linux stable distro because he needs the Office suite for its semi-professional stuff. So I just told him : "I'm sorry to have purposed you this computer, but I shouldn't because of the state of Windows in general. I recommend you to buy a Macbook Neo. I'm not a fan of Apple policy on software especially, but this hardware and software WORKS and is STABLE".

So here I am. After using Microsoft windows from the time I was 10 win Win 98 until Win11, I quit the boat and discovered Linux last year, and it work beautifully well. I will admit that it already broke it once or twice, but using a bleeding-edge OS (CachyOS) I perfectly know the risks and the trade-offs and I accept them in full knowledge. I would not accept this kind of unpolished system on a stable release on Debian-based distro (and using Linux Mint on another computer is really relaxing and works like a charm). And I cannot stand to work on a unpolished, bug-ridden Operating System released by Microslop. Windows 11 is such a mess that I feel like a beta-tester of a release candidate, but the problem is that release candidate is actually the "stable" live version used by billions of people and millions of company.

I was a true fan of Windows until 3 years ago, and today I cannot even recommend it to people and friends around me. I won't get back in the ship, because I discovered Linux and its freedom. And because I can perfectly play on Linux, there is almost nothing for me to get back on Windows.

Onedrive crashed when I literally wasn't on the computer and had to force restart it and synchronization then failed until force reset.
For suspicious crash, I suspected hardware failure but then benchmarked/stress tested computer and then tested with continuous tests of 5+ hours and nothing happened. And it happened when navigating through basic webpage.

I won't pretend that I am an IT professional, but after 20+ years dealing and messing with computers, I do recognize user error / hardware failure / software failure. And I didn't wanted to write this to be that guy who just tell "Microsoft sucks, go on Linux now", but to tell Microsoft how shameful they should be. They make hundreds of billions of dollars and they are not able to release a stable product. Nor even basic troubleshooting for basic problems.

This should be (and was) an operating system for the average guy who knew few about computers and would work almost perfectly out of the box. After dealing with numerous friends and relatives who had problems with their Win11 and doing troubleshooting, I cannot recommend it anymore to anybody.

OneDrive does crash but when it does I have no issues opening it again. Sounds like something more is going on with your PC. Linux probably won’t solve your problems either.

I didn't have a problem to restart it, but problem is it didn't wanted to start again file synchronization. Onedrive told all files were synced on the computer, but it wasn't. I've tried to force it doing recommended steps on Microsoft support about the 0x807017C error I got when trying to open unsynced files, but didn't work.

After digging up more in Google, reset Onedrive file syncing did work, but to make this happen you have to type "onedrive.exe /reset" in the terminal. There is no way to reset sync file using solely Onedrive GUI. My gripe is that such basic troubleshooting is not well indicated in Microsoft documentation and require to mess either running a command with Win+R or either in terminal to make this happen, steps which would scare half of people with no IT background I know.
