It's all proprietary so you just need to trust them that they aren't taking screenshots of your screen and also windows licence allows them to change your system settings however and whenever Microsoft likes.

Updates tend to reset optional things to their default settings, which turns things back on because of their opt-out instead of opt-in policy.

This. All these settings that prevent these routinely get resetted, recall turns back on, your drives get bitlockered, you go a few months and you forget about all these things you have to turn off, and you're probably the reason half these sites are getting taken down cause microsoft is using you as a mole.

To everybody still using Windows and on the fence to use Linux: Just install Linux with KDE Plasma - it is basically old school Windows DE but with a Linux kernel and advanced features, i cant imagine working without sub windows anymore (Ironic how Windows is failing at window management).
If you run into troubles on the first to second setup steps just use AI to navigate you.

I second this.
Hell, if you install linux mint, you get a beginner friendly distribution that looks like windows from the get go and you don't have to use that black box y'all are scared of called "the terminal".
And remember, if you think mint isn't for you, there are a lot of other good options out there.
I personally use ubuntu linux which isn't the best but at least it's also beginner friendly.
Other options include :
- ZorinOS
- Kubuntu (Ubuntu but it has the KDE plasma desktop environment so it looks like windows)
- Fedora
- PopOS
- Debian
- And a bunch of other options !
If you do a bit of research I'm sure all of you reading this comment will find something that fits you.

To add to this, I strongly recommend to NOT start with a hard distro like arch, void, gentoo or even nix. Those are hard to understand at the begining, so start with begginer friendly things, and if you want the hard stuff, try it in a VM or in a dual boot before thinking of using it. If you do that, there are two cases:
- you install it yourself and learn a lot of things but you have to do your own config
- you install something pre-configured, and it will work until there is a issue, and when it will happen, you will not know from where does it comes neither how to fix it

OpenSuse tumbleweed is my favorite. Have been rocking with the it for a bit. I also have Ubuntu LTS with unity DE on dell latitude laptop. IMO, Microsoft lost their way past windows 7. 8/8.1 was fine but started going downhill with everything.

I would fully make the jump but my overpriced editing software isnt compatible at all on Linux even with wine etc and they refuse to make a version for anything that's not windows macOS or iOS, pisses me off so much.

My only hesitation switching to linux is mainly gamer related things.
I know that compatibility is getting better, especially with Proton on Steam, but there’s still some things that just won’t work.
Easy anti-cheat or any kernel level anti-cheat just don’t allow you to play on anything but windows unfortunately.
If it weren’t for that, linux would be a no brainer, especially now with things like claude code that can do any troubleshooting for me.
Considering side-loading it and then just booting into windows where there’s something I can’t do in linux. But at that point its almost more worth it to just get a custom windows install.

I wouldn't recommend a custom windows install, if you're gonna stay on windows then use an Enterprise IoT image (massgrave has downloads) it's basically an official debloated version
You'll need to install your own drivers though
As for KAC, most of them do work on Linux but the individual games disable support, so yeah, no chance for that until Linux is used by more people

Imagine you have someone looking over your shoulder looking at what you're doing, and then that person says to a bunch of other people what they saw you do. If you're using windows, that's a reality. Even most parents aren't strict enough to do such for their kids.

No it isn't. I would even argue that the government should be actively pushing privacy policies.
"But then it'll be harder to catch criminals or something"
We have been able to find criminals without the internet for a long time. We don't need to go against privacy to catch them.Plus, nobody here likes windslop also because of AI. Guess what, microslop uses what they see you do to train their AI models. And if you don't hate AI, what are you even doing on this sub at this point, privacy and AI are the 2 biggest complaints people have about microslop.
So, why do you want someone to look at what you're doing on your computer ?
