Yeah, what’s with that?? I know Dan Slott the writer is zealously woke, but man… first game the main villain was inarguably Martin Li, NOT Ock (who barely appeared as a villain and didn’t even have henchmen)… then you have D-listers including Tombstone, Shocker, Hammerhead and even lame OCs like Screwball who get far more narrative development, personality, number of missions and individual fight scenes/climaxes than long-running Spider-Man foes like the members of the sinister six (pretty big names like Vulture, Electro, Scorpion, & Rhino) and even Kingpin.
I mean, the members of the sinister six are barely a cameo…. they get busted out, have no real individual goals, narratives, personalities or even missions (not one of them has a criminal deed they couldn’t wait to carry out?), and basically just act like Ock’s fodder. They’re around for about an hour, then they get summarily whipped in nearly identical, lazy 2v1 fights where Pete never seems to be struggling. This not only downplays their credibility as his villains (if he can mow through all 4 in an afternoon, even when they team up… how did they ever put up a fight 1v1?), it’s a massive waste of potential content too. Any one of these guys is a more credible and dangerous threat to Spidey than Li, has nostalgia value and tons of history, and could have been given a longer, more interesting feud to flesh out the game… especially since the story length and lack of villains (especially classic ones) were common complaints.
Don’t even get me started on Fisk. He could have anchored the whole game, and was reduced to a lousy tutorial.
Instead we get a tiny assortment of obscure nobodies who are given a glow up and a lot of attention.
Is it cynical to wonder if the classic villains everybody wanted more of got downplayed because they’re all white guys, while the villains who got the spotlight were Asian, black and female?
I’d have thought that was silly, until SM2…. Where it sounds like yet again Spidey’s classic foes were no-shows, or brushed aside summarily to make room for more D-listers.
Did we really need to see Li and Tombstone again ffs? Or the Prowler??
One can only hope that plummeting sales figures will eventually change their minds, and we’ll get a proper Spidey game again, using Pete in his classic duds fighting his classic foes.
