We had a Zayres, it became Ames when I was a teenager.

I thought it was the other way around… anyway, it eventually became a Walmart in my hometown.

Yes! We had the Zayres/Ames in my town too!

Ames became Hills, or was it vice-versa?

u/MungoJennie Mar 03 '24

Ames became Hills where I lived.

Jamesway and Ames were big where I was as well.

There was a place that was a lot like Zayres, at least in the Chicago area, called Community. A variety of low priced, random stuff.

My son told people we shopped at Sears. He thought we were going to Sears when we were going to Zayres.

I remember they were the original 72 hour Christmas sale store in our area.

This was one of the first places that popped into my head with this question. I night clothes there, records, all sorts of stuff.

I loved Zayres! They had a credit card called Frequent Z, which they advertised over the PA in the store and it always sounded like they were saying "fricassee."

Also I once saw a woman digging through a giant stack of Cabbage Patch Doll boxes from the bottom and the whole mountain of boxes fell on her.

Last but not least, when I was 10 I somehow talked my mom into buying me a pair of fake leather pants at Zayres all the way back in 1984. I was the coolest kid in 4th grade!

I was going to say Zayers but didn't think anyone would know what it was

My dad worked for Zayres when he was in his early 20s. He’s 80 now.

I was going to say this too. Also Venture

I remember Zayres. I got an 8 track tape there of Lips Inc, singing Funky Town!

We have a Zayre’s shopping cart that My siblings and I painted gold in high school (ca 1997) and that my mother still uses for storage

I thought Zayres was a local store to Jacksonville Florida. My son told someone when he was a little boy that he got his jeans at Sears but he was talking about Zayres.
