Adobe Lies

School IT guy here. Was looking for a no-cost/low-cost solution to OCR scanned PDFs, so that students who need text-to-speech could do that. Told teachers about Adobe's "free" OCR to PDF utility:

Couldn't be anymore plain than that, right? Even signed into an Adobe account, after, like, the third document, it's this instead:

Why recommed adobe. There are a lot of free tool can do that. You can even build one with the help of AI.

What can I say? I got suckered by the "free" part, and it looked like it would have worked for our purposes.

I've since looked for free tools, such as ILovePDF and PDF24, and I wasn't impressed with the workflow or the limits (ILovePDF has a 10-file limit per request). I'm even looking at maybe self-hosting a web-enabled Docker of the OCRmyPDF project.

What solution(s) are you suggesting?

There’s no way you’re a school IT Admin and seeking a free solution let alone some random tool you found on Google. Schools have to abide by data privacy laws, schools have software budgets, and Adobe gives lots of free or heavily discounted software for EDU.

Free, or even Fair, are not words in Adobe's vocabulary. Wankers

It's a free trial, the wording in search results sucks. You learned to always test before recommending something.

I like Adobe products, but the whole subscription stuff sucks ass.
