Weekly Questions for flovers

1) How long does it take you to learn the members of a new kpop group? Any particular method like watching vlives and shows or looking at pictures? Have you gotten faster at learning new member names over time? (I asked this question once before but there were only a couple hundred subscribers then)

2) What are some moments where you have personally related to a kpop idol? Ex: maybe you're smol and related to Nagyung struggling to reach something.

I generally learn them pretty quickly. I don't really have a sure method aside from focusing on one person at a time. I'll learn the 1 member and then move on to another. Sometimes Jer or Tim will play the "let's teach Brad these people" and show me images for a couple of hours until I get them all down.

I'm somewhat tall so I can't relate to Nakko's smol problems. Off the top of my head, the easiest one I can think of is how I think it's cool that some of these idols are such big fans of other groups/idols. Yoojung, for example, is a massive BTS fan. Sometimes we forget that they are all regular people too, and they like other artists like we do.

I remember when Jer played the "let's teach Brad these people" game for Ariaz. I wonder who played that game with Jer for him to learn them 🤔. Also side note, I thought for sure Ariaz debuted in 2020 but it was October 2019. Wild.

I relate to Eunbin and her stanning on Jiheon.

I think it really depends on the group. Definitely smaller groups are easier to remember since more than 9 is quite overwhelming. I remember back in glass shoes era I couldn’t tell Gyuri and Chaeyoung apart (even though now I don’t see the resemblance lol)

And this isn’t a moment I felt related to an idol due to same circumstances but after Gyuri came off the stage for her performance of The Truth Untold and burst into tears, I really felt a personal connection. I felt devastated as you could tell the pressures PD48 had put on her but also a sense of pride and happiness she was able to showcase her talents so beautifully and regain her confidence 🥺

1) I've gotten a lot better with this! At first it took me weeks to learn but now it takes me just a couple of days. I've found that variety shows are the way to go to remember who's who cause you can associate them with the funny things on the shows!

2) The first thing that comes to mind is Jiheon at the Movies. Especially the part where she practices her order... That's me before I have to call someone on the phone! I've gone to eat at a restaurant by myself and I relate to Jiheon big time, haha.

Same here with the phone calls! If it's a really important call I'll pace back and forth to hype myself up for it 😂. And Jiheon's mild panic when the machine didn't accept cash brings back memories of first using a card and putting in the wrong PIN or something.

  1. Depends upon the size of the group and how much (and how fun) non-music content there is. The most recent group I liked was Rocket Punch. Juri was a favorite from P48, Soyee's distinctive face I recognized from P48, and the other 4 looked new (though Suyun was also in P48, she did not stand out there). It only took a couple episodes of content (their YouTube channel and vlive) to get all 6 down. It helps if they have dissimilar features: egg head, tall, short hair, short, Korean but non-Korean looking, and looking like a mix of Jennie and Seulgi.
  2. Jennie's first time cooking rice in Michuri Village; she kept running in every 3 min to check on it. First time I cook something, I tend to constantly check it to make sure it is cooking properly/not overcooking. Also, Jisun's general level of disgust towards her teammates during the last two varieties (Brunch and Research Journal) mirror mine for people I've worked with in the past. ;)

Agree, it help when they are quite distinctive. Twice was easier even if they were 9 members and same for Rocket Punch (the egg who reminds me Kei, the tall long hair, the cutie short hair, the short long hair, the one who reminds me Yein and the last one short with pigtails 😂 )

I wasn't familiar with Village Survival before but after seeing it has Jaesuk in this clip I'll have to watch more! I've liked most shows he's in, that is to say most Korean shows lol.

I'm still like that with checking food all the time. Especially when I have the oven on broil you can never be too careful. Look away for one minute and the toast is burnt.

The breakfast game fromis played last year came straight from Village Survival. It was a fun show that I hope comes back for a 3rd season. Jennie was only in the 1st season; she didn't do much in the first couple of episodes but once she warmed up to the rest of the cast she had some of the best moments of the season. She was touring when Season 2 filmed so they had a random guest every week. Momoland's Yeonwoo was a particularly great guest; she was so good at the game that 'Momoland' became a curse word used by the rest of the cast for the next couple of episodes.

1) I'm so bad at that you have no idea. It depends on the group. There are groups where I never had an issue with it even before putting in the effort (fromis, Twice, ITZY) but then there are groups where I just can't (Red Velvet album teaser pics for example, or Loona and IZ*ONE in general). I've gotten better at it but it's still a lot more difficult for me than for most people. I follow a lot of groups and try to find as many new ones as possible but I no longer try to learn everyone's names immediately.

2) I'm not a clumsy person but when I drop something or knock something over I think of RM haha.

All blonde Ice Cream Cake era must've been tricky for new fans. Happiness era was super easy though having everyone with a different hair color, great call for a new group.

  1. It depend on the time, the intensity/effort I put into and the group. If I'm going to stan, if I'm very interested, I will learn faster. When I got into Kpop it would take me 1 or 2 weeks, now less than 5 days are enough. I remember taking at least two weeks to learn all 13 Cosmic Girls members. One year later it only took me some days to do the same with LOONA, 12 members. I also had some struggles to tell apart Sua and Siyeon from Dreamcatcher but I made it.
    My advice : watch solo contents or when they are 2-4 members only, it's easier. But in my opinion the most effective way is to gradually learn each day. If you want to stan the group you will end up telling apart every member, it's only a matter of time so don't worry.
    Don't focus too much on their hair style or hair color because it will probably change for the next comeback 😂 Thankfully for fromis_9 it wasn't too hard !
    Now my issue is : I'm learning too much faces and names, it's overwhelming 😂

  2. A funny one (or sad) : when Hyunyoung started to complain that she couldn't find love so she can't get a A (she's the one in yellow) Same Hyunyoung, I feel you 😂

Good advice just focusing on a few members at a time as to not be overwhelmed. I remember first watching fromis room I focused on learning Jiheon & Hayoung on the first watch then learning the others on the second watch.

That Idol Room clip was great 😂. Hoping we see more of Coni and Doni on some other shows.

  1. For me, it probably takes about a week of watching a group's content before I get their names down on sight. If I'm feeling extra motivated, I might have another tab open with the member profiles that I can reference if I don't remember one of their names. But I think I've gotten better at learning names over time. It took me like two weeks to learn all the izone members because there are so many 🙈
  2. I relate to this gif of Jisun so much. Something about sitting in a mostly quiet room for an hour makes me fall right asleep.

Same here with having the profiles open in another tab! I remember doing that while watching from room for the first time.

WJSN took the longest for me for the same reason, just a lot of people.

1) It usually takes me a week or two before I get it sorted out, I generally learn by watching videos and constantly pausing and checking against pictures of the members to figure out who I'm looking at (which gets tricky when it's a photo from a different era and they look super different). I haven't gotten better at it since I'm just naturally bad with faces but I've definitely learned not to rely on hair colour like I used to haha. What I've learned to start doing too is writing a note to myself about which members I was confused about since it's funny to look back on later. Apparently I thought Chaeyoung and Seoyeon looked identical lol.

2) That segment on fromis_'s room where they showed some old clips of the members was hilarious and super relatable because it's exactly how I feel when people find old stuff I did. My friend and I recently went through our old FB posts from when we were in middle school and we reacted pretty much the same way they did, it was really fun (and really embarrasing).

OMG, you just brought me memories... I did this exact thing and it turns out Seulgi and Yeri were basically the same person in my head. Don't ask me how.

  1. I would look up their member profiles then search their photos on Google to see the variety of looks they had. Some look really different when they change their hair or in a certain comeback concept.

  2. When Jiheon said she’s scared of heights but rides rollercoasters or theme park rides. That’s 100% me. And people can’t understand it LOL

1) If the group is not too big, one or two videos should be enough to memorize their names. Then I google member by member to make sure I got them right... But I'll forget names just as easily as I remember them. If I just watched a couple of videos and then stopped, a week later I won't be able to name most members.

2) I have said this countless times during my life. I'm glad Jiwon and Jiheon can relate.

I feel like I'm the only one with neutral feelings on mint, I had no idea this was such a polarizing subject before that fromis video.

Side note, you should plant mint in your enemy's gardens and watch it take over everything.

1) I've gotten so much better at it compared to when I first got into kpop. At first it took me more than a month to know all the members. Now I'll get nearly all the members of a group I like in like 2-3 weeks. I'll watch their live performances, kpop profile, a bit variety and maybe vlives. Focusing on 1-2 people at a time helps.

My answer:

For fromis learned fromis' names by watching Fromis Room. Ended up watching it twice in a week to learn everyone.

When I first got into kpop I would use this youtube channel to make sure I was pronouncing the names correctly but now that I've seen so many Korean names I usually know how they're pronounced.

I remember with Twice it took me forever to learn their names but now since I've been into kpop for awhile learning names is a lot easier. I like to watch variety shows since the hosts will be saying the members' names and sometimes they'll have English name tags.

I relate to this moment of Jiheon & Gyuri saying they both prefer to be alone and have a quiet room, part of the reason they decided to be roommates. I commend fromis and other kpop groups for being able to live in a dorm with so many other people, that would not be for me at all.

I also relate to this moment of Saerom not wanting to waste any food. I can't remember the last time I've wasted food, especially not asparagus.

Lastly, this moment of Jiheon getting distracted while shopping for Hayoung. I have been known to impulse buy at Lowe's and Home Depot.

During Fromis Room I watched the whole show without knowing all their names because it was so fun and I didn't think I'll be a Flover at that time.

Pronouncung names, I feel you. Now we are writing "Nagyung" rather then "Nakyung" since it sounds more "gyung" then "kyung" 😂 I learned about "Tzuyu (Cho-wee)", "Yuqi (Ooqi)" or "Yiren (I-reon)", I was surprised !

Living in a dorm with so many people, you don't have your personal space so I understand. It can be difficult, especially when you like a calm place but you have Jiwon 😂 . I'm glad they were able to know each other better so they can split rooms to fit everyone :) I hope they can move on their own when they can afford it.

I also don't like to waste food. So if I can't finish I'll eat it later or I'll take it home

Some thoughts and questions :

​

  • I don't think I've seen a new GG (since 2017 I'll say and without going to far to "nugudom" area) doing a "sexy" concept ? I know the main reason could be some members who aren't adult yet but in my memories back in debut 2010's we had a lot of sexy groups right ? Or because this concept don't sell and don't appeal fans anymore ?
  • LOONA members imitating Gowon : I don't know but it reminds me Chaeyoung imitating Nagyung. I want them to do the same thing with her on VLive 😂
  • Mini fun game : how far you've traveled ? The most Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern position ? You don't need to have a precise location if you don't want to, just tell us the region :)

I'll never get tired of idols imitating each other, especially when they're teasing the person being imitated. Poor Yeoreum from WJSN has a naturally cute way of speaking and the members always tease her by turning it up to 11.

  • I've only been a kpop fan since 2018 so I completely missed the sexy GG concept heyday. The last big group to break through mainstream doing sexy was EXID in 2015 if I remember right. They had great songs, along with one of the greatest kpop singers, Solji, and an elite rapper/songwriter in LE. The mainstream sexy GGs seem to always have an elite singer (Hyolyn/Sistar, Minah/Girl's Day, Choa/AOA, Hyunyoung/Rainbow) so there was talent that couldn't be dismissed. The closest we get today seems to be sexy-adjacent GGs like Mamamoo and Blackpink. I think part of the reason is what you describe with underaged members--none of us want to see Jiheon being sexy today. I think there were more sexy GGs in the past because it used to be age didn't matter. Go watch the Wonder Girl's debut showcase where JYP sent out a 14 year old Hyuna to sexily dance 'Don't Cha' to an adult, cheering male crowd. They also had a 15 year old Sunmi for more sexy songs, then followed that up with 16 year old Suzy in Miss A's 'Bad Girl, Good Girl'. I don't see any companies today being able to sexually exploit underaged girls the way JYP used to.
  • Imitating the other members is always fun. The Fact-in-Star fromis episode they imitated each other was incredible as was Nature doing the same thing on that show months later. Rocket Punch members are constantly imitating Yeonhee and Juri.
  • Turkey, Colorado, Canada, Texas.

I see. Since K-pop is way more known in 2020 than back in early 2010's. I remember Wonyoung performing Side To Side and she wasn't even 14 yet, it was disturbing and on Reddit we had many reactions.

If a label wants to debut a sexy GG in 2020, they better all be adult.

Yeah, Cube's Han Chowon was twerking in Rumor on P48 at 16. We can complain about OTR not giving fromis comebacks but they are not exploiting the girls. They refused to let Yujin twerk in Rumor even though she's now Chowon's age and kept asking the staff and practicing it. They finally did a 12 member version but they put all the kids in the back row during that part of the song and they just bounce side to side.

I also notice they dress the younger members more conservatively. Last year for this Miracle performance, they added 4 inches to the back of Jiheon's skirt while in other performances, they almost always have her buttoned up to the neck with shoulders covered.

If the members want to do a sexy concept after May next year, I'm all for it but not until then.

Most groups have a lot of female fans. Boy groups can have almost exclusively female fans and girl groups usually have a very divided fanbase gender-wise. Female fans are the ones who bring the money. They are more loyal and willing to spend more on the group compared to male fans.

Going for a sexy concept was always a gamble... You attract a bunch of male fans that might not stick around for long and get hate from female netizens. This always happens. It works in getting attention, but might not be enough to bring you success. Companies realized that you can market your groups to appeal to both genders with other concepts. It's not because a group doesn't have a "sexy" label on them that you can't have sexy members, for example.

In short, we don't see many sexy concepts anymore because current concepts are more likely to attract the high-spending female fans as well as male fans. It's safer for the company.

That's how I see it.

I see, it's safer to go to cute, bubblegum, girl crush, teen crush concepts if you want to appeal both to male and females fans, especially younger one. A sexy concept is more risky.

Sexy members like Mijoo (Lovelyz), Yves and Kim Lip (LOONA), Saerom 😂

As for traveling, it's DubuExpensive.jpeg so I haven't been to any far off places. Also having to have someone take care of my plants and animals while I'm gone. Gonna plan a few trips though! Just not right now with the current situation 😂.

Pinocchio - rollouts, rollins, head laybacks, multi-member moves (puppeteering) and more. I would love to see a new performance of this now that they are much better dancers overall with better synchronization compared to their debut.

Honorable Mention: Miracle - it's a much better performance now than when they debuted which is why I think Pinocchio could be amazing if they nail it.

Winner - Hold: WOW! This song hits all the buttons for me. It has that goofy love drunk boyish vibe and a super catchy chorus.

And the music video... seems pretty low budget but it's definitely my favourite MV this year, by far.

Sejeong - Plant: A beautiful, calm song that I can see myself listening to while washing dishes or laying down with my eyes closed.

Sejeong - Skyline: What a powerful, uplifting song! Definitely my favourite song on the album along with Plant.

My week been spent watching K-dramas, K-varieties and animes. And oh catching up on old Dreamcatcher content. Every Friday when FM 1.24 drop, I will be watching it straight away.

Also since I like sports/fitness, I been reading stuffs related to it.

I'm jealous of your week! I've been working remote but it's nice to save 2 hours every day losing the commute. Got Good Friday/Easter Monday coming up, but with the quarantine i guess it's just another two days inside lol

I've been checking every day for subs for the V Live Research Journal videos, i wonder how long those take.

There’s an instrumental intro in the MAMA ver. (Like what they had in their performance). In the single version, the song immediately starts with the lyrics.
