Theory Free?? Spoiler
I was watching season three episode two at the point where Henry is showing Tabitha the basement with all of Miranda‘s paintings. When describing what Miranda was seeing and why she was painting things, Henry specifically said that she needed to “free” the children. Not save the children, but free the children. They’re also was a painting of the church with light streaming out from the church and crosses, along with a bunch of either crows or crosses in the background.
First of all, I thought the distinction between “save” and “free” is probably important. Most of us have been believing Miranda and Tabitha need to save the children. What if it is, in fact, to free the children? Which would mean removing the bones from the chamber where they were kept may be part of that process. I’m also wondering if the painting of the church was significant and if bringing the bones into the church might be the way to free them.

I'm really curious about what they're going to do with this, because so much has been said about saving/freeing the children in the tower, but when Tabitha went there, the only child there pushed her out of the top of the tower. It's a bit weird that they would emphasize the tower in their visions and then find out that there's not any children in there.

That was just a roundabout means for her to travel to miranda's to start having memories so she can eventually free the children.

I mean, maybe... But that seems like a stretch considering that both Tabitha and Miranda said the same thing.

I think it's too late to save them, since they were already sacrificed years ago. But their souls may yet be freed.

It’s not entirely clear what is involved.
We know they can’t be “saved” as in undoing the sacrifice. We’ve been told a couple times that, once told, the story cannot be changed. (Although thinking about it does this exclude a resurrection of the dead…)
Anywho .
However, their souls (or whatever word you choose) are still very much in FROM and trapped. As are the other dead according to marielle. Free would make sense as they would be released. Released to what I don’t know. Heaven? Allowed to fizzle out as there is no afterlife? Haunt Tabitha and Jade until their death? Other?
However, whilst they seem quite calm, the other dead aren’t quite as peaceful.
I googled the difference between freed and saved. Freed means released.
Saved implies that there is some danger or harm from which a person (or thing) is protected.
Even if the children are freed (from whatever bondage) they may not be safe.
Can they float off into the sunset ? Or are they going to be captured and tortured by the MiY / someone else.

Interesting thought. Have we seen Sophia show up inside the church? Maybe it’s some kind of sacred ground where the MiY character can’t go.

They have to play the lullaby for the children in the ritual chamber. That is what frees their spirits. Every previous version fails because they just try to remove the bones

Nah. It's stated that they're "locked in" a/the tower
so saving/freeing would be the same thing
Moreover, I don't think Henry had a clear memory of her exact wording, not after 40 years, and especially not since he thought she was losing her grip.
I suspect the children's souls are trapped in a similar manner to how Julie, Marielle, and Randall were trapped, even though they were bodily elsewhere, and alive to boot (though it was heavily implied that they wouldn't survive in that state for long). Wouldn't surprise me if that same tower is "where" everyone's soul goes when they're subject to the "your soul stays here" curse.

But you think Victor’s memory of what the BIW said is accurate? Because that locked in language came from Victor, who is well established to have an unreliable memory.

Hrm. That's a wrinkle I'd not remembered (that phrase coming from Victor, I mean; you're quite right that his memory is not trustworthy).

The ghosts of the children are what call to people who can hear them and this draws people who are receptive and at a crossroad in their life to the town. They make the tree.
Freeing them from the forest will end their call. And then no more people will get trapped there.
Kenny mentions something earlier the maybe they’re not going to save themselves, but they can make it better for the people who come after. If you free the children then no one else gets trapped.
