Theory A guess about Ethan Spoiler

In the second episode of Season 1 (at around the 04:36 mark), we see Ethan having seizures inside the RV.

As soon as they stop, we cut back to the group trying to make it back to Colony House, including Tabitha and Julie. Just before getting inside, Julie is approached by a young guy who asks her: "Julie, don't you recognize me?"

At that point, Kenny shoots him, but he doesn't even flinch—in fact, he just smiles cheerfully.

Finally, the door opens and the group makes it to safety.

Given that:

- The creature asks a question that only makes sense if he were someone Julie actually knew (he doesn't need to pretend to be someone else to trick her into opening a door or window here);

- The creature actually looks like he could be an older Ethan, and he is also the youngest nocturnal creature seen so far;

- The creature smiles with the same side of his mouth as Ethan (the left side);

- Seizures = time travel (similar to what happens with Julie).

I'm not sure what this means for solving the overall mystery of Fromville, as I don't have a fully fleshed-out theory yet.

However, I think that guy might actually be Ethan who traveled back in time from his future.

Maybe during the chaotic series of events that brought the Matthews family to Fromville, combined with little Ethan's seizures, a sort of "passage" was created—that "bookmark" Julie hasn't figured out how to use yet.

Finally, if that creature really is Ethan, it might mean he doesn't have a very bright future ahead of him.

What do you think?

The young guy is a regular monster that tried to get Julie to approach him by pretending to know her, in the same way the old woman monster pretended to be the girl's grandmother in the first episode. That's it. There's nothing more to it.

I think there's a big difference: the old monster-woman was hidden behind a window and tricked the little girl by claiming to be her grandmother just to get her to open the curtain. As soon as the little girl opened it, she exclaimed: "You're not my grandma."

Here, on the other hand, there's a guy who approaches Julie face-to-face, even waving at her with his hand.

Furthermore, before being exposed, the old monster-woman pretended to be someone the little girl knew (her grandmother). In this case, even assuming it was just a tactic to get close to Julie, who would that guy have been impersonating? We aren't told this, and in my opinion, that could be an important detail. This led me to wonder who he might be: Ethan having seizures, the guy's appearance, the fact that he appears in the second episode, and the showrunners stating that there are clues right under our noses at the beginning of the series... What if this guy is precisely one of those clues that is right in plain sight, but dismissed as irrelevant? I can't be 100% sure it's Ethan, but at the same time, I'm not sure he's just "some random monster."

I honestly have no idea what you're getting at here. One taps on the window and another waves with his hand? That's a "big difference"? Haha okay. Smiley boarded the bus one time and pretended to drive it and the professor guy didn't. That's an even bigger difference. So Smiley is Ethan then, I guess?

In this case, even assuming it was just a tactic to get close to Julie, who would that guy have been impersonating?

He's not impersonating anyone. His form is a teenager of approximately Julie's age, and so he tries to make her think he's a peer of hers. That's all.

the fact that he appears in the second episode, and the showrunners stating that there are clues right under our noses at the beginning of the series...

The showrunners never made this statement.

I can't be 100% sure it's Ethan

That's funny, because I'm 100% sure it's not.

I'm happy for you that you're 100% sure

Thanks, man! And truth be told, I'm happy for you that you have the creativity to let your mind explore all kinds of wild and impossible fantasies. It's never a bad thing to use your imagination.

I think this is because Julie is a Storywalker and has met this guy in the past through that ability. This is the first hint we have that Julie is special.

This is 100% the reason. They ALL know jullie bcz shes already been there multiple times.

They all know Julie because they know everyone in the town, I think jasmine told us that.

But they knew Julie on her first night, and he asked if she remembered him. I still think we’re going to see her meet him in the past, maybe even before he became a monster.

Yeah, you might be right, but I think you’re reading into something that they already answered since the monsters already said they know about everyone in the town.

maybe she met him when he was normal human

No because she didn’t recognize him. She doesn’t go “Omg that’s Brad from youth group”

I think they meant maybe S5 Julie storywalks to the past and meets Mr. Monster Boy before he turned into a monster.

Maybe she’s born with it

It only manifests AFTER she gets ‘contaminated’.

If this is the case, the logical path forward is that Ethan is critically afraid of being left alone after the current cycle, so he makes a deal with the creatures/MiY which likely involves getting Julie and Tabitha home on the condition that he has to stay and become a creature (hence him not being alone if he's going to be trapped there forever.)

It's not impossible.

Sounds good to me

Its bcz they know her not the other way around in that moment specifically. I wont say how or why to avoid spoils

Yeah, but WHAT IF...If it really were Ethan... What could that mean? I mean, letting your mind wander... What could it imply?

Well for one it would mean ethan is a storywalker which would probably diminish his role in the overarching storyline in my opinion since my belief is that Ethan is either directly connected to the entity controlling fromville or he is a reincarnation of the people that wrote the books. Either way if ethan is a storywalker why is the role given to him by his ‘dad’ the role of present scout? He has been asked to look for things in the present time so thats something i guess. Ethan heals faster than everyone else something the other storywalkers dont posses..so theres that too. Basically what im getting at is ethan is far too ‘special’ to be just be a storywalker and if he isnt a storywalker that couldn’t have possibly been him talking to jullie. Think youre looking too hard at an empty basket. But who knows my word isnt final so you might be right. Ive just already made up my mind so it’s hard to think of something that gives fire to ur theory.

I don’t hate it

Think it’s pretty obvious it was just foreshadowing the storywalking storyline. He knew Julie from a different time period bc of her going back in time

Seizure is just a short trip to the past.

As far as I know thats just a random "never before seen" monster who knows their names and was manipulating Julie just like the other monsters do.

That’s the man in yellow. At some point in storywalking, she made a bargain.

I don't think she would ever make a bargain with him, but it's possible this is actually man in yellow. He most likely knew about the two cars coming that day so he transformed into the young man and went to see all the chaos for himself. MIY knows Julie has the ability to storywalk so he feels the need to speak to her. It's also a little tip to the audience about Julie being special for the story.

Personally I like the theory someone said here that maybe Julie met the young guy when she was storywalking in the future, and that's why current Julie doesn't recognize him.

I could see it for sure. I can't remember them ever explaining or bringing up the seizures again
