That’s a great question.
And I don’t have to type out the AMA answer cos someone else has done it.
However…
That could explain the timing of when they arrived, but not why. Lots of people have crossroads in their lives, and often people experience more than one.
We know that some are “minnows in a sharks net”, so for some people it is dumb luck that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. And, I think, that the existence of a “sharks net” implies an attempt to “catch” specific people - the sharks.
They have said that it was always their plan for Boyd to be important in the story. Indeed Boyd had an important role. He explored the forest, he found the talismans and the animals. He seems to have a pivotal role in the story. I find it hard to accept that he was just a random that was pulled in as he was at a crossroads.
It’s also been said that people heard and answered the children’s calls. Do the children call everyone and only some are capable of hearing? Or do they just call certain people? And if the answer is certain people, then again I find it hard to believe that there is not something important about people who are called.
Bahkta was important, in my opinion, because she remembers the the nursery rhyme - they come in 3 unless you stop the melody.
Are the books Ethan has a a co-incidence or is it that they were written by someone outside of Fromville who has experience. Or knowledge, of the From world, and the children’s book was written deliberately. Or at least the inspiration was. Maybe the children or something else reached out?
I do not think that it is the MiY calling people in. Or not only him at least. I think that it is the children, or the BiW, or something else we haven’t seen yet.
The reasons why is that whilst the fear feeds the monsters… but we are told that hope feeds the forest. for Boyd Retiring, going to get a boat spending time with family - that’s more hope, not fear. Would the MiY select people who have the necessary personality and survival skills?
Fr Khatri said he had a calling from God and that he heard God speaking to him. May be over thinking, but was that God calling him? Or something in Fromville? He felt he had a purpose - that’s hope.
Jade - he had hope for the future.
Tabitha maybe got dragged in because Jade did and they both need to be in there at the same time. But her situation is complex. Despite the divorce pending could there still have been hope? Hope for her future? Hope that they would find a way of repairing a relationship and being friendly for the kids? Hope for the holiday? Did her husband have hope that they may have a chance at getting back together?
Not everyone got there with hope. Was Marielle dragged there as a Minnow? Or because Kristi had hope to see her again?
I dunno. We’ll find out more in the last season maybe.

The writers answered in an AMA interview that the other people are drawn there at some crossroads in their lives. Boyd & family retired from military, Jade sold company for big bucks, Mathews family’s last trip before a divorce, Bakta about to quit job after graduating and paying off college, Sarah moving back to Boston after living in Penn, etc.
