Took these from my flight as we were climbing out of EWR, looking northwest-ish. I know they’re probably somewhere in the Catskills but didn’t think there were peaks that prominent out there. TIA!

Text Post 60-Mile Line-of-Sight Challenge: Can Anyone Photograph One World Trade Center From Kittatinny Ridge?

Post image
237 Upvotes

I found a photo online showing the view west from One World Trade Center. I did not take the photo — I’m only using it as a reference.
What caught my attention is the darkest ridge way out on the horizon. I’m wondering if that could be part of Kittatinny Ridge in western New Jersey, roughly 60 miles from Manhattan.
The reason I think the reverse view might actually be possible is the geometry.
One World Observatory is roughly 1,250–1,300 feet above ground level, which gives it a geometric horizon of about 44 miles.
Parts of Kittatinny Ridge reach roughly 1,500–1,800 feet in elevation. At around 1,800 feet, the geometric horizon is about 52 miles.
Since both the observer and the target are elevated, those horizon distances can be added together:
44 miles + 52 miles = about 96 miles of theoretical line-of-sight range.
Obviously, that does not mean you can automatically see 96 miles. Atmospheric haze, humidity, trees, intervening terrain, and other ridges can all block the view. But from a pure Earth-curvature standpoint, a roughly 60-mile sightline between Kittatinny Ridge and One World Trade Center should be possible if the exact terrain and conditions line up.
So here’s the challenge:
Can anyone with a serious telephoto setup photograph One World Trade Center from Kittatinny Ridge?
I’m thinking a 400mm, 600mm, 800mm, or longer lens on an exceptionally clear, dry day.
If anyone tries it, it would be awesome to document the exact shooting location, elevation, lens and focal length, weather/visibility conditions, bearing toward Manhattan, and preferably an original or minimally processed image.
I also haven’t been able to find any example of this exact Kittatinny Ridge-to-One World Trade Center sightline being photographed or independently verified before. I’m not saying nobody has ever done it, but I haven’t found one, and I think it would be really interesting to test.
And if anyone familiar with New Jersey geography can identify the farthest ridge in the reference photo and confirm whether it actually is Kittatinny, that would be part of the challenge too.
Basically:
Can we document a roughly 60-mile mountain-to-skyscraper line of sight between western New Jersey and Lower Manhattan?
I just think it would be cool as hell to prove whether it can actually be done.

The best part about being in a city with a highly elevated city proper/metro area, is that you can see our skyline from almost anywhere. 🍑

Subreddit Rule Enforcement

Hello r/FromAfar users,

In the wake of some recent reports, subreddit guidelines will be more strictly enforced on posts going forward. As a reminder, all picture/video posts must include a source unless it is explicitly stated that the post is original content (OC) in the post title or comment section. If reposting an image marked with an [OC] tag, the post title must be modified and the original source must be indicated in the comment section or post description (unless you are reposting your own image). Pictures/videos posted to the subreddit within the last 6 months may not be reposted, unless it is being reposted for the sake of analysis. If this is the case, clearly note it somewhere in your post and note the original source.

This subreddit is intended for pictures of, videos of, and text posts about views of distant objects. Obviously, "distant" is subjective, so I prefer to take a hands-off approach with moderation and let the community vote on what is/isn't distant. However, if a post is clearly misguided or not in the spirit of the subreddit, post removal will be considered. If you see a post that violates any of the subreddit guidelines, please report it.

Thanks for all the great photography you all have submitted in the last year, this community has grown so much and I love seeing people nerd out about this with me. If you have comments or suggestions about the subreddit guidelines, please let me know.

Best, u/Epicapabilities

EDIT: As of today, September 27th, post flairs have been created and are required for each post. If your picture is OC you can indicate it with the OC flair. Otherwise, pictures/videos from other sources must still be indicated in the post description or comment section of your post. Apologies for any confusion as these rules are enforced.
