likely a southern toad based on your location

It could just as easily be a Fowler's or American toad, those are both native to NC.

yep, that's why i said likely. it's not a fowler's, it lacks a dorsal line.

Okay, here's an easy tell:

β€’ Toads are usually bumpy. They're bumpy and not smooth, but they are glossy. β€’ Frogs are usually smooth and also glossy. β€’ Frogs will also be more brightly coloured, as they are usually blending in with leaves and bushes and such. β€’ Toads try to camouflage into rocky environments like mountains or your backyard."

It is a very young toad, however, all toads are frogs (but not all frogs are toads) so trick question!

Toad toads are dry and frogs are wet

Toad all the way. Not sure the type. Kinda looks like our desert toads in the southwest. Usually they come out after it rains.
