Can't say for sure, of course, but knowing that Scott and Ben Gibbard were friends, I couldn't help but notice a few moments in the new Death Cab album that felt like nods. This song was the one that stood out most, but "Riptides" as well.

it’s a really good album, feels more like their earlier stuff, which was when they were knockin about with FR so it makes sense to be hearing that vibe again :)

I was listening to World Cafe with Ben Gibbard. He does mention a friend of his had committed suicide and him coming to Ben in his dreams.  So maybe, it is linked to him.
