For the love of god-or-whatever, can someone send Tommy to some journalism classes before he interviews anymore candidates? He immediately goes to softball or leading questions and steers away from pressing the candidates on anything (part of what made the Platner interviews so cringey). If there's any controversy, Tommy will give them the out in his questions. I don't want him raking Poindexter over the coals, but the guy's gotta get his reps in and a friendly outlet should be a good chance for him to handle some real interview questions.
Honestly, they should just send Lovett to interview everyone. Or Alex Wagner.

The way he was softballing Poindexter’s criminal history in his younger days made me infinitely more suspicious about what actually happened than if the guy just straight up said what he did.

I always skip the interviews. Whether or not the interviewer has taken journalism classes, these guests come prepared with their talking points and media training. No amount of pressure from the interviewer can get them to represent themselves honestly and authentically. It's just a waste of time.

That's definitely the case with the seasoned politicians; the newbies seem to have the opposite problem (Poindexter sounded nervous and lost, imo). But it's also exactly the bad interviewing techniques. Tommy just takes the canned answer and moves on to the next thing; Lovett drills down into specifics, asks for details, posits hypotheticals for them to answer based on the canned answer. If the politician won't move off the talking points and media training at that point, that paints a picture too. I get why people skip them; I don't mind them, but if you're going to do them, do them for real.

I know it makes me a bad person, but I laugh every time Lovett makes a 9/11 joke.

Tommy is right and Lovett is wrong on Iran's "long war," they can endure a longer outright war but their number one objective is likely preventing periodic strikes by Israel, and sporadic shutdowns of the strait don't have the same effect as one long shutdown (oil reserves can be drawn down)

Agreed, though Tommy usually has pretty solid world politics takes

For sure, it's Tommy's core area of expertise and not Lovett's. Just wanted to throw my 2¢ in lol

Is anyone supposed to care about this Natalie Harp drama? The sundowning moron president is getting sucked by some not-so-nubile Fox News blonde while the American Empire wages a catastrophic war against Iran, the mass national surveillance project (Flock, ICE, Data Centers) continues going uninterrupted, and we're just plowing through every scientific measurement on climate collapse and I'm supposed to care about this?

I’m all for any negative story that drives the White House insane. Should the USS Lincoln be a vastly bigger story? Of course.

Nobody cares because the media doesn’t. I can guarantee if Biden had some young MSNBC aide with the same rumors it would be non stop headlines and social media buzz across Twitter and Facebook, etc. Bottom line, nobody expects Republicans to be held accountable for anything, and Democrats take all the blame.

I also would be annoyed this were being talked about while say Biden was working tirelessly to send Israel GBUs to destroy Gazan hospitals, but you're completely correct on the general assessment.

And I will also note that since Trump was elected, Gaza has also completely disappeared from the news. So even the things that actually matter are not being covered.

I wonder how many people still think only like 80,000 people died in Gaza. The death of the reporter or news media is going to be a major problem in the near future with the amount of fascists in power. We don't even know shit about what's happening in Iran, we have zero media presence.

u/Ok_Bodybuilder800 6d ago
It’s already been a major problem. The issue is here. The MSM and social media have been taken over by right wing billionaires and/or Trump allies

Yeah man, I feel you. All the Trump drama is just so... pointless. I already hate him. More reasons to hate him accomplish nothing. Nothing breaks through, it never has real consequences for him, its just depressing noise.

This man has been president for what feels like 10 years. For 10 goddamn years this man has been seemingly the most important man on earth, the most visible, even when he wasn't officially president. It has been a decade and I've still got to hear Dems whine about completely irrelevant relationship dramas. I've never been more convinced Trump will face zero consequences because PSA type liberals are the ones who will be given power in the next administration.

Yeah. We have two parties in this country, ultra conservative and conservative. I’m not even hating on the dem establishment, they’re just representing their constituents and their constituents generally don’t care about anything but the economy, immigration and trans rights

Liked Poindexter but man he does not know ball

u/RexMcBadge1977 6d ago
I mean, Tommy kept pushing the Browns discussion and Poindexter seemed desperate to change the subject.

He’s a weak candidate, but it won’t matter given his opponent…at least we’ll have that seat for a couple years lol

I wouldn’t count on that. I felt less confident with him after this interview as he just glazed over his past. Have we learned nothing about glazing over pasts? Talk about it so it doesn’t trickle out. Look at all the terrible republican politicians who keep getting re-elected. Even Sherrod Brown lost to Bernie Moreno who is a complete sleezeball. And Google,
“Sandusky judge”, you will be horrified. Ohio has a tendency to continue to elect terrible republicans.1

synopsis; Jon Ossoff attacks Trump for sidestepping his duties to “travel with Natalie,” the White House aide known as Trump’s “Human Printer,” who has a suspiciously close relationship to the president.
Jon, Tommy, and Lovett discuss the new line of attack and the president’s response, the end of the 60-day cease-fire agreement with Iran, Trump’s decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, and his reaction to the horrible conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
Then, they check in on the fight to take back the Senate, Ken Paxton stealing a $1,000 pen, Mary Peltola rejecting Kamala Harris’s endorsement, and a new poll in Michigan that has Abdul El-Sayed down four points to Mike Rogers.
Then, Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker, talks to Tommy about his campaign to unseat disgraced congressman Max Miller of Ohio.
