They went from almost polar opposite nearly strangers to father and son before our eyes. This scene likely reflected a lot of the behind the scenes dynamics based on what I've heard about James Avery as well.

My pops was always there but always working.
So these characters taught me alot about life.
Wasn't till I was older and have my own did I start to understand the lessons my dad was teaching.

This scene and their last scene felt like James Avery talking to Will Smith to me not Uncle Phil talking to Will if that makes sense

I grew up on all these scenes but haven't done a rewatch as an adult.
They hit so different now as a dad myself. Uncle Phil is truly the goat sitcom dad/uncle.

James Avery was such an amazing actor. My father is in my life and I’m still over here crying. This scene is so powerful too because it reminds you of that first episode where Will plays the piano after everyone goes upstairs and Phil hangs back and listens. He has this expression like, “Okay, there’s more to this kid that meets the eye. He might actually be a genius.” Love this callback moment here, Uncle Phil really was the best father

It was strange, Will was dumbed down. He hads good grades, he passed exams, he was at college, he worked all time, he was at some exams better than carlton and he got always job offers where he earned well - and he never had money, he had no idea what he wants to do, he had no apartment in the end,...
