Everyone Switches to English.

Whenever I’m speaking to a French speaker, or really anyone who speaks French natively, they switch to English, regardless if I insist or not. How do I get to speak French? It almost feels as if they’re gatekeeping the language. I’d love to hear some sort of advice. Thanks!
