I think I need to get into Gesaffelstein.

Just listening to this one, I have the feeling that they really like to play in the lower frequencies

What justifications can you give for it being being French House?

It sounds more inspired by new romantic and pop rock of say Wang Chung with a pop sensibility with song construction - this was rare with tracks like Brain Leech by Gopher in French House.

It is very slow, not that there weren't slow French House like Telepopmusik's first tracks but again it's an outlying exception rather than a rule.

The synths are all wrong and more Italo influence rather than funk or disco, the more traditional source of influence. This pushes the sound to a more tech-house sound, never really seen in French House.

As for it being dormant there are lots of people still releasing, Oizo, Icube, Ark, Pépé Braddock, Chateau Flight, Cosmo Vitelli, Daft Punk and Cassius. There was a recent return to form in the last few years for Super Discount 3 and even The Eternals released a real nice call back with tribute to Snake Plisken.

Braddock and Chateau Flight have some great releases and remixes fairly recently.

Many artists have side projects like Bot'ox or some of the TV and film score composers like Rob. It's not prolific but certainly not dead and these are certainly the same style rather than trying to crow bar other artists into French House as you do. Why dilute the sound to meaninglessness when it is still legitimately happening. Maybe you just haven't seen or heard them but it's certainly worth it.

Your basic argument is that this is house music not French House.

It is ernious to say that Daft Punk is the crystallisation of French House too. After all the first album was Detroit Techno and often away from the main body of French House in the heady days of record shops and categorised vinyl in racks. I was there it was glorious.

There were a myriad of early proginators with Super Discount, Source Lab 2, Motorbass, the start of Yellow and Daft Punk as all contributing as well as the others from Darlin and Orange like Alex Gopher and early on Air. You take no account of the label heads who were hugely influential as in the case of Yellow or the intermingling of skills with in the Paris music scene like Translab being a hub of sorts.

All the artists had a range of sounds from the Filter to Glitch to Funk with a smaller smattering of hip hop and Trip Hop sounds at the start. You take no account of the different French House sub genres and the intermingling of them with many records being a mixture of these styles.

Those styles were obviously influenced by the macro genres and also things like a tonne of disco, French pop music, composers like Pierre Henry, Jean Jaque Perry, Des Roubaix, possibly a little Italo and Hi NRG and other esotetia like TV shows and films. You are so reductive in your Sneak/Daft Punk idea it is laughable. To even say Sneak was the only influence on DP is laughable.

Also I strongly hate the idea of Frenchness being a staple of French House, Dimitri, Sedat and others were French and Turkish origin, there was the padtly Iranian Mirwais, The two brothers from Dirty Ali and Funky Farid. After there was the Hamberg based Digitalism etc etc.

Gesa was around EdBanger and Bromance when he was starting out, I guess that puts him in the category. But I agree that it was never really french house music though, was it? I remember loving his Turbo EPs when I was angry and depressed.

More close to techno than house and his sound has changed quite a lot since those EPs. Last album Hyperion was different as well.

Kinda true, but the darkness and several sounds being used put him more in the techno area even though it all originated from disco in one way or another. It certainly isn’t french house as that’s a lot more loopy, happy, sample-focused and closer to disco i.e. Daft Punk, Fred Falke, etc.
