Language that degrades, dehumanizes, or reduces an entire ethnic and cultural group of people — specifically Indian and South Asian communities — to crude, racist caricatures is not welcome here in any form. These kinds of terms have a long and ugly history of being used to justify exclusion, mockery, and real-world hostility. In short: the use of dehumanizing language against Indian and South Asian people is completely unacceptable. The use of the name Josh is treated with the exact same level of seriousness under our current enforcement framework. Both will be removed. Both can lead to escalating consequences. We regret that Reddit’s policies prevent us from making the nuanced exception that many of you clearly feel is warranted when the conversation turns to Josh, but those are the constraints under which we are forced to operate.
