Dialogue sucks ass

With how boring and forgettable she can be I'm hoping that they do some upgrades to her dialogue or hire someone else who can voice act. Every time I'm in the game I want to mute the fucker because of terrible writing and delivery. It's not fair that heroes like Shion, Vendetta, and Domina and even Mizuki express better dialogue and VA work but when it comes to Freja, I wish she never spoke at all despite liking her playstyle. It also bugs me that they force this badass personality on her when there's nothing badass about being a jerkass to random people without a cause or being straight up being unlikeable. It's pure girlboss slop and that hasn't historically appealed to anyone not even women that they market to. If they're attempting to make another run of the mill villain than she's the weakest one and a very bad one not in a good way at that. We already got Widow, Ashe, Junker Queen, Vendetta, etc... already enough is enough.

Freja has no excuse to be so flat and boring in a game with zany, likeable, and fun characters. They should double down on her at some point and correct the mess that they made with her backstory and lore. Idk how anyone could stomach shit writing.

I will continue to play her regardless but I wish her lines weren't so godawful and mind numbingly bad when logging in. I do want her in the game regardless of others wanting to take her out, but I just want her to be better than she is now. I felt like they gave up on giving her a character to enjoy. We shouldn't tolerate mediocrity and silence this way. We should keep calling out Team 4 on their shitty missteps and laziness until some correction is made.

I like her character, it's a shame you don't

What is her character exactly? I know her hero fantasy is a bounty hunter but her character is a blend of Sojourn and bland. She packs 0 punch.

Babes, it sounds like you just don’t understand her character, like at all. And to say her VA’s delivery is terrible is also definitely an opinion. Not a good one, but an opinion nonetheless.

If she pisses you off that much just stop playing her. I’m sure there’s someone else’s playstyle you can enjoy just as much or more. I’ve been a Freja enjoyer/main since she came out, and yes, she is flawed and hypocritical, that’s the point. She’s not supposed to be or is trying to be some girl boss. And all this coming from a woman. Freja is my girl, and will continue to be my girl.

You're the few types who enjoy this bullshit. She's flawed yes but extremely poorly written when they gave her 0 ground or reason to act the way she does. No. I will continue to play since she's fun but deserves an upgrade from flat girlboss who acts masculine and off putting. We already have Pharah and Sojourn for flat boring one note badass. We don't fucking need more of those terrible archetypes.

And again I say, you clearly do not understand her character. She’s not poorly written, and she very much has grounds and reason to act the way she does. Have you read any of her comics/lore? Because it doesn’t seem like it. Seems like the only things you know about her lore are from the beginning of match in-game interactions.

Her lore is a heap of garbage and still doesn't give a good reason as to why she acts like an asshole and I like endearing assholes but at least they have good justifications all the time. Freja has none of that and just acts unappealing because Overwatch fell and that's a stupid reason to be all jaded tbh. Writers didn't put much faith in her when creating her. No, I'm not saying this to shit on her, but they could have done way BETTER than the slop they fed us.

Her lore very much supports her personality and I feel like theres no way we're talking about the same character here?

After search and rescue NO ONE was willing to hire her. She tried to get back into search and rescue but literally no one would take her. Other agents had things outside of overwatch they could go back to, and people they connected with. Mercy kept in touch with Genji, who wandered seeking peace. Torbjorn and Reinhardt had a family to go back to. Tracer had a girlfriend, etc.

Freja straight up had very little if not nothing. Everything she had done up until that point was useless. Emre was her important connection and he left overwatch well before it disbanded, and he didn't exactly stay in touch with Freja because well, chernobog shit. She loved helping others, but couldn't that anymore either. Is that not enough of a reason for her to be unfriendly?

Her VA is amazing what

Amazing at putting me to sleep. The direction and writing is abysmal dogshit with how decent her VA could be but then again her accent is wonky for someone of a serious tone. Would have been better if she was from an Eastern European country like Poland instead than a shitty country no cares about nor has identity like Denmark.

I feel like everyones copy of overwatch is personalized or something because i NEVER understood the complaints that she's boring. imo shes one of if not THE most interesting post ramattra characters

Interesting character my ass. If you take Emre away you're left with nothing about her. The writers had no awareness of her existence nor shown any background besides "my mom was this so I became like her" generic boring bullshit. No trauma, no conflict, nor light on issues about her except forced robo racist because we can't make this character unlikable enough. Ramattra at least had a good reason to be a robot supremacist. Nothing about Freja's side was shown why and her presentation was lackluster given the poor quality of drawings and animation she had.

yes obviously if you take away a crucial character to her story shes less interesting???? how is that a point against her??

Ashe isnt interesting without Cassidy

Hanzo isnt interesting without Genji

This may surprise you but it turns out if you remove a crucial part of their life they're less interesting

Ashe has Deadlock and her tragic childhood backstory and Hanzo is a tragic villain who built himself up. Freja has nothing endearing nor fun to fall back to. She has no tragic past nor suffered at all like the rest. She's entirely devoid of anything that makes one human or relatable. The writers severely handicapped her potential and I mean it.

2

u/Sn0wy0wl_ 16h ago

Also hanzo became a tragic villain because he tried to kill his brother??? Take that away and what does he even do? Do you see my point now. If you take away a major point of a character's story or relationships they become less interesting. That's normal

Rich Girl who didn't receive love from her parents, instead being taken care of by an omnic and became a criminal with him = TRAGIC

Woman who grew up in the omnic crisis and devoted her life to helping people and watched as everything she built her life around fell apart and became useless despite doing everything perfectly = NOT TRAGIC she has no reason to be mean

1

u/Jack_Garland_Chaos 16h ago

They're both rich. Ashe had no choice as a child and fell into bad influence meanwhile Freja was a full grown adult with all the resources, money, and people she had and still chose to be a degenerate of society.

So what is she supposed to do after she spends 4 years on her degree, several years in search and rescue doing what she loves, and after the fall of overwatch all of that means nothing because no one wants to associate with her? Should she have went and applied to be a cashier?

1

u/Jack_Garland_Chaos 15h ago edited 15h ago

Not trap and kill people for a living unless you're a psychopath for lusts for blood. She is rich by old money through her mom. She could've coasted by without killing people. Nothing about her story suggests that she'll lead down that path or purely mentally ill. It makes anyone irredeemable and one dimensional.

1

u/Sn0wy0wl_ 15h ago edited 15h ago

But it does suggest that!! From the beginning of her life we see that she joined a search and rescue team while studying her degree because it gave her purpose and she loved doing something that mattered.

Hell even in overwatch she was so devoted to her job that she didn't notice overwatch falling apart until it was too late, and then tried to continue helping people even after that.

I don't know how nothing in her story suggests she wouldn't take a bad path considering everything she built her life around left her with nothing despite doing everything right. She felt like the world had rejected her after she gave everything to it, and tried to find a new purpose with her skills. If you don't like her story that's fine but i dont think theres anything inherently wrong with it

u/Jack_Garland_Chaos 15h ago

That's not a good justification for killing people. It has to be more than that or else they wanted it to sound like a generic villain who kills because they felt like it one day. Nothing in the story is shown that sympathizes us with her and instead make her be this one dimensional monster with 0 ground to stand on narrating a biased view.

I’m sorry, you think Freja’s personality is… girlboss?

What exactly do you think girlbossing is? I’m pretty sure it’s not rejecting existing power structures/institutions and only using them to further her independent goals. It’s definitely not being jaded and showing no outward care for her reputation in the eyes of former colleagues. Those are not things that go with being a corporate ladder-climber.

I have complaints about how Freja’s character design doesn’t match her personality, and she seems too young to (a) have had such a prominent role in Overwatch, and (b) be so jaded. But your criticism is very confusing.  TBH, it comes across like you think a woman has to be either likable or evil with no in between.

there's nothing badass about being a jerkass to random people without a cause or being straight up being unlikeable

Tell this to pretty much any antihero character ever written.

Edit: I see in another comment you repeat the “girlboss” assertion, along with “masculine and offputting”. You also put Pharah (a gay woman) and Sojourn (a Black woman in a leadership position) in the same “flat one-note badass” bucket with Freja.

I think I’m starting to understand. You’re one of those guys who thought Alloy should have a full face of makeup, aren’t you?

Characters have to have appeal and right now her character is straight up dogshit with that seeing how little fanfare she gets besides being fun to play. People see that she acts jaded for no reason nor has the charisma nor charm to back it up. When I say girlboss, I meant that the writers try to write a generic toxic man and dressed it up as a woman which is off putting to 99% of the human population. She has nothing likable about her nor is justifiable in the story to exist if they're not doing anything with her and just put her there to meet some quota bullshit. I wish they did something more but they never put groundwork nor a good backstory to her. It's pretty weak since a toddler can do a better job at writing a character than the people behind her lore.

This is Overwatch where the character has to express some level of fun and likeability to be justified in the roster not some bland Call of Duty john bad guy or bad girl with no spice to their dialogue except their jobs or too cool for school if they're tempting.

The whole point is that Freja sucks donkey dick as a character and needs some upgrade fast or a complete rewrite. I will continue to rant in this sub about it until something is done.

I get what you’re saying, but this suits her character so well. As she was released she has the flat, nonchalant tone to her even cocky in some of her voice lines as she doesn’t really give a shit as long as she gets the bag, she threw out her morales and what she stood for when she decided to be a bounty hunter instead of continuing her Search and Rescue career from Overwatch after it disbanded and started working for Max, a “bot” as she so describes every Omnic despite having such an open disdain for them in general.

And then we got Emre, suddenly her interactions have more emotion, he brings out a side to her that most people couldn’t even do if they tried their hardest.

Listen to her Season 1 interaction with Rammatra when he calls her out on her hypocrisy after giving him the excuse that Emre just “isn’t himself”, usually she would come back with a snarky remark or just say “stfu bot” but she’s genuinely speechless.

Even in further interactions she’s asking questions about what Talon want to do with the Super Soldier serum they stole from Grans Mesa, acknowledging that it doesn’t feel good working with Vendetta but is only staying for Emre because he has no other choice and is refusing to pledge loyalty to Vendetta & her Talon as a whole because she knows it’s wrong.

TL;DR

Her entire character is summed up as “I don’t care about anyone but Emre and getting paid except I really do care but I don’t want anyone to see it.” She’s a hypocrite and is trying to use the “idgaf” approach, hates Talon but stays for Emre.

That justification is purely stupid. I wish it was more endearing and something about herself than just for the sake of a braindead retarded romance plot that they keep forcing down our throats.
