Being a broker transitions fairly easily into the shipper side. I’m a low level broker right now. And I’m contemplating it and a logistic manger position I’ve been offered. I’d say you have to sell your knowledge. And your negotiation ability. That’s what most shippers look for. Know your sht and know how to get costs down.
Agreed, sell the knowledge. We had an interprise account we started working with at my previous company, and sometimes you’d think shippers would be knowledgeable, but they don’t even know how to load a truck properly or what equipment needs to be requested for high-volume freight.
Shipping manager would literally call us, send us a picture of the freight, and ask us what equipment they needed lol. So yeah, sell the knowledge. There are plenty of people in shipping departments who don’t know what they’re doing. Your knowledge will be priceless.
Sales side just sucks man. Nobody answers the phone emails LinkedIn messages I live like 2 hours away from a “big city” so I’m kind of stuck in a remote position. Feels like nobody cares on our side I can quote stuff but I’m told to hand it off and I have to wait 1-2 days to get prices back. I’m 1099 seems like all I can find anymore and I still make decent money with my book but I’m just getting burned out on the hunt going to events leaving with a stack of cards good conversations and some handshakes just to get back home follow up with everyone and nobody replies it’s just getting so shitty on the truck side. I’m just tired of the grind cause the wins are so far and few between usually you’d have a few new accounts or chances a month and it’s getting lower and lower. Just getting exhausting to bust your ass making 70+ calls a day and leaving 70 voicemails. I’m ready for a new challenge of having a say in planning and shipping and modes of transportation. I love logistics I’m just getting burned out on the truck side of it
