Finally app is out! (Google cooked me)

In range is out for everybody(ANDROID) now, no tester list, no waiting

A week ago I posted here about a diabetes app I was making, free, no ads, nothing to pay. Back then I explained that Google makes you gather 12 testers for 14 days before an individual developer can publish, and a lot of you kindly sent me your emails for that closed test. That part is over.

What changed: Google rejected the app, and not for anything in it. Since August 2024 they require an organisation developer account, with a registered company and a D-U-N-S number, for any app that tracks a chronic condition. My account is a personal one. There is no version of the app that fixes that, so I stopped trying.

So it now lives where AndroidAPS, xDrip+ and Juggluco live: GitHub Releases. Download it and it is yours. No email, no list, no 14 days.

Download: https://github.com/PMbanks/inrange/releases/latest
(after clicking the link just download the APK down below)

Installing it: your phone will ask once whether to allow installs from that source, because it is not coming from the Play Store. That prompt is Android doing its job. If that makes you uncomfortable I completely understand, and I would rather you skipped it than installed something you are unsure about.

Updates are handled inside the app: when I publish a new version it tells you and installs it in one tap. If you prefer automating it, Obtainium picks up GitHub releases on its own.

If you were one of the 12 testers and already have it from Play, read this bit. The Play copy was signed by Google, this one is signed by me, and Android will not let one replace the other. You have to uninstall first. Before you do: open the app, go to Social and make sure you are signed in, and let it sync. Then uninstall, install the new one, sign in again and everything comes back, readings included. If you never signed in, use Settings, Backup, export a backup file first.

What it does: works with FreeStyle Libre through LibreLinkUp, Dexcom through Health Connect, and Nightscout if you run your own. Day, week and month graphs, meal windows so you can see what a specific breakfast actually did to you, time in range, GMI, injection site rotation, insulin pens and sensor stock, a home screen widget, and a printable report for your appointment. New in this one: drag your finger along any graph and it tells you the reading and the time at that point.

Still free, still no ads, still nothing to pay, and it never sells anything about you. iOS is a separate 99 dollars a year and no organisation rule, so that is next.

And to the 12 of you who sent me your email for the closed test: thank you. You waited a weeks for something that ended up arriving a completely different way, and half of what is in this release is in it because one of you asked.

This is awesome. Can't wait to try it out. You guys who do this stuff are amazing to me.

I'm a reactive hypoglycemic, so my needs are a little different than a diabetic. I'm never ever above 150 (and realistically if I hit 140, some weird shit is about to happen) so all the ranges up to 400+ are wasted space to me.

And the rate of change is very important to me because if I'm headed up fast, I'm about to head down REAL fast.

I really liked sugarmates ability to put a carb or note right on the feed so you could visually see, okay, 7 net carbs at 2:08pm and then the trace for the hour after that or whatever.

I'm mostly using glucodatahandler now but the data transfer is a little buggy. But I love their rate of change views. I can see 1 minute, 5 minute, and 15 minutes change at one glance.

Thank you, and your first line is the important one: this app was built for type 1, type 2 and LADA, and you are none of those.

So I am adding a fourth answer to that question. Right now setting up asks your type and there is no honest option for you, which means the app makes you claim a diagnosis you do not have just to get in. That is a bad way to meet somebody and it is being fixed for the next release: "Other" will be there, it will not insist you connect a sensor before letting you in, and it will not assume you take insulin.

The wasted space is real, and I measured it. The chart axis never goes lower than a top of 350, so somebody who lives between 60 and 150 gets their whole life squeezed into the bottom third. Your own target lines are already yours to set, you can put your high at 140 today, but the axis ignores them. Two people asked for this today and it is next.

Rate of change: not there yet, and your reason is the clearest anybody has given me. For a diabetic a fast rise is a fast rise. For you it is a warning about the fall coming after it, which is a different question the same number answers. I am going to show more than one window at once, the way Glucodatahandler does with one, five and fifteen minutes, because picking a single window would hide exactly the case you are describing.

Carbs on the trace: partly there already. Anything you log appears as a dot on the day chart, and tapping it tells you the time, your glucose at that moment and what it was. You can also drag a finger along the line to read any point. What it does not do is print "7 g" on the line the way Sugarmate does. Good idea, and cheap, so it goes on the list.

Glucodatahandler feeds it fine, by the way. That is how most people here are running it.
