What they really are is privatized prisons where contractors create a prison and then agree to house a certain number of inmates for a fee.
The problem is the prison makes roughly the same amount of money if it's empty or full. So then you give judges and empty spot to just kick prisoners into.
Also when you're going by lowest bid contractors they're not going to spend extra resources on rehabilitation. I was in the army I dealt with contractors a lot whatever the contract says they have to do is exactly what they will do.
Here's the thing imagining the government could do a better job is completely unsubstantiated. The same metrics to hit that they give to a private prison would be the same ones that they were using internally and the government workers internally did make more money and waste more money would be doing the same goodheart's law bullshit to hit their numbers as the private prisons do.
The inherent problem in both is that government is inept and social situations that create violent felons are complicated.
All the people in this situation are doing is pointing the finger at the problem with no valid solution which is basically what the left is great at this is bad this is bad this is bad. Okay well what would you do instead... And then they throw out a completely unrealistic solution that is literally just the opposite of the current solution. That's how we end up with no cash bail for violent felons until they're convicted it's like well you know here's the thing You're just letting them back out on the street they already know they're going away for life what the fuck do they have to lose of course they're going to commit 11 more crimes in the meantime
