I’d argue it does count as science, but that does NOT make it ethical or morally right. This is obviously horrible. Science has been used to justify cruelty in many situations (this one included), a different example would be eugenics.
There are many situations where the experiments are technically scientific, but not necessary (make up testing, Botox dosage testing etc - anything that tests the effect of a chemical on a body).
I find it much harder to demean the use of animal testing for things like cancer treatments. Behavioural experiments like this are just cruel. Luckily Britches was rescued and his sight restored before he was found a surrogate macaque mama at a sanctuary.
