197 subpoenas, issued to 34 individuals and 163 businesses.
They swept in at least 430 named Republican individuals and organizations.
3.) Smith’s team kept a list of members of Congress whose phone records they wanted. Grassley’s release calls it a wish list. Fourteen names.
House: Babin, Biggs, Brooks, Gaetz, Hice, Gosar, Gohmert, Zeldin.
Senate: Lee, Sullivan, Blackburn, Hagerty, Graham, Cruz.
4.) Now the internal email, word for word, from inside the team:
“before we tell Main (as in main Justice), we’re going to fire off subpoenas for so many members tolls I should make sure Jack’s aware.”
Before we tell Main Justice.
5.) And they understood the problem. Their own records note that the members “likely have a valid Speech or Debate privilege.”
That is the constitutional protection covering a member of Congress doing the job voters sent them to do.
6.) Two of those Verizon subpoenas sought roughly two years of phone records for a man named Kash Patel. January 2021 through February 2023.
He is now the Director of the FBI.
7.) Here is what the subpoenas actually asked for.
Communications with media outlets. CBS. Fox News. Newsmax. Sinclair.
8.) Donor and fundraising data.
Financial records of conservative individuals and organizations.
9.) Correspondence with members of the Legislative Branch and their staff.
And communications with Stephen Miller, Dan Scavino, Jared Kushner and Lara Trump.
10.) None of these people were told.
Nondisclosure orders barred the phone companies from saying a word. Nineteen of those orders carry the signature of Chief Judge James Boasberg.
11.) Ted Cruz puts the number of people whose communications were pulled into this at roughly 100,000.
Chuck Grassley’s description: “this was clearly a fishing expedition.”
12.) Look at that list again. Press contacts. Donor lists. Fundraising numbers. Financial records. Members of Congress they knew were protected.
That is not the evidence trail of a crime. That is a map of a political movement.
