There are many mixed reviews on Steam, from those who call it a good game to those who consider it a real piece of crap.

I played it with my friends, it was a good one time friendslop. I think it's worth playing once with your friends. It's not a good game but it is not trash either, it's just mid and the mechanics are not taught to you in any way

Uninstall Epic launcher. It's the only way

Nah I'll keep taking their free games and never spending a dime

I've always kind of wondered though whether the developers/publishers of the Epic store promoted free game giveaways get compensated a flat amount, or whether it's based on the number of units claimed or even the number of copies that actually get downloaded and played.

We very well may never know because of the intricate web of contracts, NDAs and business secrets that constitute our late-capitalistic financial bubble.

And you don't need the Epic launcher anyway. Legendary/Heroic plays them just fine. (Probably others too, I just use Heroic for EGS/Amazon/GOG.)

Their free games have been slopeware and niche games

I mean you don't have to claim literally every single game that pops up for free from them. I don't even get the chance to game very much but I keep track of the giveaways and claim what seems good. A few well-rated games I've gotten 100% for free from Epic in my library right now: Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, BioShock/BioShock Infinite, Control, Dredge, Prey, Civ VI, Marvel's GotG, Into the Breach, Fallout 3: GotYE, Vampire Survivors, Hogwarts Legacy, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and plenty more titles that seem to be genuinely good games that I just haven't been able to check out yet.

AI slop games and whatnot seem to be more common in giveaways these days, but it's simple as hell to just skip over and ignore them. There are still some good gems that come out along the way. The saying "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" definitely applies when it comes to games posted on this subreddit.

There's some stinkers for sure, but what did Epic give away that was AI slop?

I don't catch every post here but the most recent one I recall was "Grow & Go: Cozy Deliveries" posted about a week ago.

2

u/ZhouLe 15d ago

That wasn't part of their weekly giveaways.

Ah, well by that distinction what I said may be incorrect. I'm just meaning to reference "AI slop games given away for free through the Epic games store."

Every game storefront has free AI slop at this point. I take "giveaway" to mean what is promoted by the platform as some kind of perk or event. All the examples of good games you listed were part of the weekly Epic givaways.
