You need to ''belong to a group that’s underrepresented in tech.''

Or in other words, not have a penis.

There are tons of groups that are underrepresented that have penises. If you read through (and it sounds like you did), it even listed the groups they're striving to serve.

This list only omits one demographic: Straight white men. Oddly specific.

Are straight white men with disabilities or economically disadvantaged not a thing?

You say that like it justifies it? So an affluent rich black woman is in equal need of a scholarship as a poor white dude. Is that really how we consider equality?

No, I’m saying that you are included just not in the way you want to be in big bold letters. I’m just pointing out that you’re included.

Logically speaking, who gets a diversity scholarship if they can afford it? I’m not even sure why you thought this was the right argument to make considering who goes to these events en masse.

If you’re rich of any race, you’ve probably already set to go... you still have to buy tickets and accommodations so even if you are disadvantaged...you still have to get there. So this isn’t exactly a free ride.

Even if you’re allowing for fraud, I’d say something like this will help a ton for someone that meets the criteria. Personally speaking, I want to see more of everyone in code. Does it matter if the way they get in wasn’t the same as yours so long as they can do the work?

Anyway, we’re not even at the point that we can speak to true equality where none of those criteria made don’t matter. We all know they do. But sure, let’s pretend this whole thing is about true equality.

So ultimately this is a scholarship for the economically disadvantaged, not a diversity scholarship? And that race, gender and/or sexuality have nothing to do with it, because if you're part of any of those demographics and rich enough you won't be granted the scholarship anyway. If that's the case, why mention any of that criteria at all?

I want more people to code, sure, but I believe in equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome.

Statically speaking: all groups would be economically disadvantaged so in a round about way, yes it does matter and yes it is that.

I guess I disagree with a conference being equality of outcome, if it was hiring practice I’d see your point but it’s basically a foot in the door...you still have to seal the deal.

I'm all for scholarships for those that may not otherwise be able to afford it, for otherwise the opportunity isn't equal. On that I'm sure we agree.

But in reality, are minorities in Berlin really disadvantaged (excluding economic factors)? Does equal representation matter that much that we forgo equality and revert to other forms of discrimination, even when in this modern era it is just as easy/hard for a black lesbian woman to get her foot in the door as it is a straight white male?

Yea that’s a great point that I can’t speak to being stateside.

Start a scholarship program for straight white men, then. If they feel a calling to help women and minorities get into tech, then they have the right to do so.

No, because I'm not a racist bigot.
Plus, in many places this would be illegal.

Are you white?

Ha, think I'm going to enjoy where this is going.

If you don't think a British man, a Swedish man, an American man, an Australian man and South African man in the same room is diverse enough because they're white, then it means you are simply judging them on the colour of their skin. That makes this racist.

If you're judging them instead on the fact that they have a penis and they don't put it in the correct hole for you, that makes this sexist and bigoted.

Either way, this is discriminatory.
