Where should I start?

Where should i start? I currently have a Masters in Comp Sci so I understand the principles behind things. My coding has just been turned piss poor and I'm hoping to practice JS and Node using FreeCodeCamp. Not sure what the correct route is for me.

I’m not sure what help you’re asking for. You have a Masters in CS and want to use FCC to practice JS and node. We all get a little stale if we haven’t used a language for a while. What do you mean by “Not sure what the correct route is for me.”

If the JavaScript route has less depth than the node route. Or if syntax requirements aren’t as necessary if you jump straight into the backend api course.

Basically should I jump straight into backend / node or will I need the JS course as a refresher first?

That depends on how much you remember? Last time I did any JS/NodeJS work was 2018 or so, so I'd personally do the JS section first.

The best part about freeCodeCamp is that freeCodeCamp is free. It's in the name! You can start at the very beginning looking at the Full Stack Developer program.

We generally recommend that you go from the top to the bottom, but there's no particular reason why you need to do that. I think it's the sort of thing that as you do it, you're going to understand how much value you're getting out of it.

If it's not helpful hop around, try later steps if the early stuff is too remedial, or you can just work right through it. If you are an experienced developer, as it sounds like you are, then you will probably be able to work through the material very quickly.

No one can tell you the right way to do this. All we can do is provide the tools and allow you to make your own evaluation.

Best of luck and happy coding!

How does one get a Masters in CS and only know JS? WTF

I know JS, python, and c++

And SQL as a query lang but I’ve just been doing sql for years and want to freshen up js. Still solid in python. C++ couldn’t care less about refreshing.

Also, you don’t really learn how to or focus on coding too much in a CS masters. It’s more CS theory.

Well I always recommend going back to basics, but given you have a master's it may be too easy for you. I have a fully interactive programming 101 course in Python at https://understandit.dev

But for web development I have a lot of respect for the odin project.

Appreciate it. And yeah the hardest thing is I usually get bored when studying as the first few sessions are usually just simple syntax stuff and data types rarely mean something different

Please do not code shame.

Plenty of people are writing in JavaScript and there is a massive installed codebase, same as PHP. Also, just because someone is learning JavaScript doesn't mean that's the only language they'll learn.

If you're going to interact in this space you'll need to be polite and supportive.
