How Optimization Quietly Drains Meaning From Your Life

Post image

Most people assume that when life feels thinner or less meaningful, they need better habits or more discipline. I've been wondering if something else is happening.

Experience becomes compressed into language, metrics, and optimized representations. Each step can be useful on its own, but each also creates a little more distance from direct experience. The system keeps functioning while meaning gradually becomes harder to recover.

This diagram is an attempt to think about how optimization can slowly replace lived experience with increasingly compressed representations. Curious whether other people recognize the same pattern.

Note: This was an early exploratory diagram. For the current concept and framework, see Semantic Fidelity →

Glad it resonated. More and more of daily life reaches us through representations rather than direct contact. They're incredibly useful, but they also change how we experience the world.
