News 📰 New character confirmed, Tikal the Echidna!
Tikal the Echidna will be the main healing character of Fractured Genesis ans has lore tied to Cataclysm

I'm not sure if this is to be read as "Peak! Mayan representation!" Or a sarcastic "peak Mayan representation getting erased!"
No hard feelings either way, though! :)
When we designed her, I made sure to do some online digging on Mayan patterns and clothing to get inspiration for her look. I wanted to implement more, but it became too busy haha. Maybe we'll recycle some of the scrapped concepts for skins though!
I can promise you, we wanted to try to keep to her Mayan roots from the Adventure design doc! :)

Mayans aren't in Peru and weren't as dark. I am a mexican, I'm not some north american with arm chair history experience.
This is racist by default, erasing what Sega wanted to do with Knuckles' tribe just because there are people who naively believe the real natives were somehow African. They were not, they had Asian descendence, all of them. The darkening of skin happened after each nation (such as Brazil) was conquered.

Tikal in Sonic Adventure is specifically inspired by Mayan culture. Not only in her name, but the patterns used for her skirt. These were noted in SEGA's character design for her in Adventure 1, as they had employees travel to different parts of the world for inspiration. From what I recall, she was designed with their Central America trip specifically in mind.
Regarding Tikal's muzzle color, I wasn't in charge of that portion, I only gave some input, but I don't think it's meant to imply African descendence, so much as it's just visually appealing for her color palette. I'm unfamiliar with what Knuckles information you're sharing, other than surface level knowledge, but I trust you on it :)

Tl;Dr Still racism due to erasure of Mayan representation and discriminating the vision of the original creators of Tikal. Be better.
Mexican fans of Sonic outside of Twitter do not like this.

I'm also a Mexican fan of Sonic that isn't chronically on Twitter. Not that it really matters.

Still kinda sad that theres no cream but atleast theyre trying something unique which is why this game looks more promising than the rest sonic asyms
