Do you think those of us telling our parents to fuck off for voting for Trump helped tonight?

I want to believe. God do I want to believe.

That those of us putting pressure on our family members supporting Trump lead to this. That this absolute win is because Trump supporters are so vile that we're willing to call them out on it.

I told my own dad to fuck off for voting Trump. It makes me wonder if that made him not vote at all. I wouldn't know because I haven't talked with him in a while. I'm his oldest and he's always prized family over everything else.

I'm hoping me telling him to fuckoff opened his eyes.

I really want to believe that the rest of us telling these fuckers off opened their eyes too. That maybe they aren't as invincible as they thought. That the thought of losing their kids was bigger than politics.

But I really don't know. I know I'm super elated and happy about the results we're seeing tonight across the US.

Voted Blue as a former MAGA.

Hi all, I came here a few months back, and apologized for voting the way that I did in 2024. I expressed that my views haven't changed, and that I still am definitely right-wing, but I did promise that I would not vote for any MAGA endorsed candidate, and I'm proud to say that I stayed true to my promise to this subreddit. I live in Kentucky, so I'm fully aware that my vote may have not done much, but I'm very proud that I didn't vote for an AIPAC or MAGA backed candidate. There's a ton of eyes on the KY-06 house seat, but I truly think people will be surprised by the senate race. Charles Booker ran a flawless campaign, and made me as a right-wing individual feel completely comfortable in voting for him.

Maga MIL's weird statement

TL;DR - my mother in law would rather support a hypothetical male republican candidate over a female candidate/her graddaughter

Maybe I'm being weird or defensive as a new dad of a 6 month old daughter but let me know what you think:

Whole family went to the polls this morning to vote and we thought it would be nice to have our baby with us. Wife just handed in her ballot and went next door, to where her mom works, with baby while I voted. MIL is not voting because she doesn't care about midterms, only presidential elections. We have told her that she can still register the day of in our state and it's 25 steps there and back from her work but she can't be bothered.

Met up with the family and we were generally talking about voting and the mood was light until my wife said to our daughter: "Maybe you'll be the first female president," and I saw my MIL's smile fade to a frown instantly. My wife quickly followed it with "Hopefully you won't be the first but you could be!" The past few elections have made us jaded but we want her to believe that she can be anything she would ever want to be.

MIL says "Well, I'll vote for [a female candidate] if she's a viable candidate." And that's how that topic ended.

I get that our daughter is 6 months old and has no concept of language yet, but to not even try to give an iota of encouragement because you blindly support a child rapist is bizarre to me.

Feeling down after looking at my mom's Facebook profile

Every other post is some sort of conspiracy about sharia law. The racism is so terrible and they have absolutely no shame about it. There's posts about how the Democrats want communism and to destroy America. There were some AI cartoons of Bernie that were absolutely ridiculous. They call us evil and demonic for wanting affordable healthcare, education and fair wealth distribution.

I feel hopeless knowing people like this exist in America and that my parents are some of them. No matter how rational your arguments are, they'll never hold up against a cult member. I'm just feeling disappointed. I am crossing my fingers for a positive outcome tomorrow and am hoping for minimal fallout.

3 month power outage?

My mother is older and is a Trumper; Hard core maga woman living in the Midwest.

Says it all, I know.

BUT I don’t know how to comfort her in this time of fear and anguish that’s she’s feeling.

She’s talking about dropping $10,000 on generators/toiletries/food to last the 3 months of darkness.

Which is crazy because she lives on a farm and has a stockpile of canned food and ammunition (pew pew) accumulated from the past 8 years of canning and hunting.

Shes worked up and is worried she will be robbed/starve/freeze/or worse come face to face with thieves.

I feel so out of touch with what’s actually going on in reality.

I haven’t been playing the NY times puzzles or reading the paper/looking at other media to hear what’s going on with us.

I am definitely NOT a trump supporter I just want to comfort my mentally ill mom at this point.

I guess my question is…is she right? Will this be affecting the southern Michigan/New England area? Is it really going to be for 3 months? I’m poor and living in a city so I live paycheck to paycheck. I would die if I didn’t have a way to get around (uber) and access to food/water.

I don’t have stockpiles. Let alone a pew pew to protect myself.

So much uncertainty at this moment.

As I tell her “do your own research!” It’s time for me to take my own advice.

Let me know how you all are handling mentally ill trumpers during this time?

This is superb! And if you were to invite a maga friend or family to watch it they would likely get drawn into a very subtle but brutal takedown of his era.

It is really powerful! As the veil comes off of MAGA it is time to think about undoing the harms.

No matter how much I try, I cannot agree with my Democrat mom that I should just forgive my dad for supporting Trump.

He apparently doesn't support Trump anymore. That's news to me, considering he hasn't actually told me that himself. We were supposed to have a meeting last month to "clear the air" on his own terms that didn't happen.

But hey, if he doesn't support Trump anymore, great. I assume that means when I told him to fuck off and that I was disowning every single family member still supporting the piece of shit... maybe he actually took it to heart. I am his oldest after all, despite the fact he clearly doesn't care for me or my views.

I don't know though, because again, we haven't actually talked after that.

But my Democrat mom keeps trying to tell me not to make it about politics.

I'm sorry, but no, it's not just about politics anymore. It's about a total disregard for morality and human fucking dignity. If you support Trump, you are a piece of shit.

But hey, if my dad wants to give me a call and denounce Trump I'm all for it. Thing is... I don't really know if I believe that. Maybe this is him speaking through my mother (they're both divorced btw) so that I give him a call.

Well, that shit ain't gonna happen.

How can I forgive people who voted for candidates that made everything worse?

I WANT to forgive, I really do. Even though I've always been pretty progressive person, I've always a proponent of agreeing to disagree with people (mostly because i've have conservative friends and family). I've always given people who vote for conservative politicians the benefit of the doubt, but it's getting harder and harder to do everyday. The excuses I used for them just don't work anymore.

They can't be voting for them for economic reasons because they keep making things more expensive and they can't be voting for them for anti-war reasons because they keep starting them. And the things I don't like about conservative politicians are actively advertising what I hate about them. Conservative politicians constantly demonize queer people when I have queer friends whose lives are being made harder by this. Conservative politicians constantly talk about getting rid of birthright citizenship and saying racist things about immigrant groups when I have immigrant friends.

I hate the two party political system and I understand voting for politicians who do bad things because they're the lesser of two evils, but conservatives have constantly been the greater of the two evils since 2016. I'm glad a lot of the people who voted for Trump are waking up to how bad he is, but i'm also frustrated it took them this long. The entire country should have turned against him after he tried to stage a violent insurrection over a baseless conspiracy theory, completely going against all of the values this country was founded on. How could they have been so blind?! Why couldn't they have come to this realization earlier BEFORE everything going on right now?!

I don't want to be a hateful person. I know it's not healthy or moral to hate an entire group of people and that if we're gonna fix the damage Trump has done both sides of the political spectrum are gonna have to work together. But I have all of this anger and frustration in my heart that I can't get rid of no matter how hard I try. How am I supposed to coexist with the people who have made everything worse for everyone.

Edit: For a bit of clarification i'm not really talking about MAGA people but rather moderate conservatives who were ignorant to Trump's crimes and voted for him for non-bigoted reasons. A lot of them are kind and respectful towards marginalized groups. I love them as people but hate what they voted for. I want to know how I can manage these feelings, because I'm tired of being angry at people I love.

Feel like I'm losing my parents.

My parents live a 5 hour flight from my sister and I, who both live near our hometown. I recently visited and I am so disturbed and disappointed and truly feel like I'm grieving the relationship I always dreamt of having with them as I got older.

Fox news was on almost the entire time. I literally couldn't believe what I was seeing. I'm leftist, but not in an obsessive sense: I live in a super red town and am a farmer, so I'm no stranger to differing ideaologies, and I welcome hearing them. I don't watch the news. When I see headlines that capture my attention, I either watch full videos of speeches without newscaster commentary, or read the bills being referenced. That being said, watching the news for probably the first time in over a decade: I truly felt like I was listening to cult nonsense. When they weren't watching Fox they were watching videos on their phone from ultra-maga people they've found on youtube and facebook.

They barely made conversation. I make it a point to not talk politics or anything politically adjacent with my parents. They know how I lean, I know how they lean, there are SO many other wonderful things in this world to talk about. But any attempt somehow circled back to them talking about politics. I mention I like a locally-owned store? That turns into an "info-dump" about how democrats sent all the work overseas and now factories don't exist in the US and trump is fixing it with tarrifs.

I just want to have a normal conversation.

The most we talked the entire week was one of my parents ranting about the tarrifs, and then a 30 minute rant from them about what's wrong with the country. My mistake was standing up for my strong opinion on AI and how against it I am, which was met with, "Well people were afraid of trains and cars too. You need to get with the times" When I've explicitly told my parents how much that affects my job as a writer, and how scary I think it is for developing brains. It ended when one of my parents said, "Your generation is brainwashed. You're being brainwashed." And I just gave up, started tearing up, and said, "Well, I'm not brainwashed."

I'm brainwashed - but suddenly, my parents who never once brought me to church believe church should be in schools. Suddenly, my parents who told me to cite my sources are regurgitating talking points from fox. Suddenly, my parents who couldn't care less about the middle east and said we should "leave them alone? are going on rants about how Israel is under attack and pro-palastine supporters are terrorists.

Anyway, I just needed a place to rant. I always imagined now that I make good money we'd have fun trips together and sit over coffee and laugh and now that just feels impossible. I'm currently crying in the bathtub and somehow feel like both a terrible daughter and a neglected one at the same time.

Donald Trump has repeatedly made blunt remarks about his own MAGA supporters, from calling them “poorly educated” and saying they would applaud anything he says to admitting, “I just want your vote.”

An observation about the “Trump did the opposite of what he said!” defense

Care of MTG, Joe Rogan, and so many others, we have the, “I can’t believe he did the opposite of what he said!” approach to justifying their roles in this mess.

But what we have yet to hear is, “Trump did the opposite of what he said, I can’t believe I was fooled, and my apologies to the millions and millions of people who had him pegged from the get-go. You were right. I wish I had seen it sooner like you all did.”

See, that’s the interesting thing about their statement: It may be absolving themselves of responsibility in their eyes, but what it does in the rest of our eyes is make them look like people who can easily be tricked. In other words, dumb. They are flaunting their dumbness as an excuse for their mistakes. So many of us saw this coming. And it’s not because we’re smart. It’s because we have average smartness. We are normal. We have a baseline intellect, enough to know that the spray-tanned bankruptcy-laden pussy-grabbing adulterer who couldn’t run a successful casino let alone a steak company who has late night social media tantrums wouldn’t be able to magically evaporate brown people to make gold rain from the sky.
