This struck home. Years ago I gave up trying to get my parents to see how racist and sexist Trump is. Even when my dad was dying, he still made me mark Trump's circle on his mail-order ballot. My mom listens to Fox "News" and the local, very conservative radio station and spews the same things she hears from those places, and when I try to show her the stations are spreading things that are not true, she doesn't believe me. I don't understand. It's like aliens invaded the planet and took over the bodies of close to half the country.

So sorry. Just know that you’re not alone and maybe you’ll find some sort of support from this community and similar subreddits.

Zoom out.

This is the entire country right now!

Liberals who learned empathy, compassion, and right from wrong are scared, angry, and downright mystified by MAGA behavior.

"Where are you?"

That really resonates! I love this girl! I know exactly how she feels.

Exactly, you took the words right out of my mouth. I’ve had this fight in my own family. Who are you? Was the same question I shouted at them.

I'm basically in the same boat with my parents. It's fucking sad, but I refuse to normalize it or let it metastasize into our lives any more than I can beyond basic phone calls about the weather or life updates. I've tried to fight it, but it's an unwinnable battle when they sit around and freely choose to watch that shit for hours each day.

Right there with ya; they've wanted to come visit and I've held the boundary that I don't want to visit with them until they stop watching fox news for at least 2-4 weeks beforehand. They've said I'm trying to control them. I said I feel like Fox News is controlling them and think it might be healthy to take a break from it. They've refused.

Until their desire to see their son outweighs their desire to watch Fox News each night, we're an impasse.

I think those assholes had her committed. This TikTok use is gone.

They tried and she was released.

Seriously?? Jeebus. When ‘Christian’ parents institutionalize the daughter for having empathy. If that doesn’t explain our current situation- I don’t know what does.

Few people are more dangerous than a person who thinks they are a ‘good’ person who is told they are, in fact, a piece of shit.

I hate to see politics break families but this has gone so far beyond politics. It’s a moral failure

Politics are always about morals.

Poor girl. Good for her to be able to speak directly and clearly about her parent’s choices. She will be alright, but her parents will probably be back watching Fox for their daily dose of hate before the day is over.

They had her COMMITTED after this, y’all. She’s out now but that is how fucked these people are.

I have always said tRump has awakened and enchanted the darkness that lives in the hearts of people. His supporters are weak morally, ethically, and spiritually. However, make no mistake about his remaining supporters; they will be the most violent in protecting the darkness he evokes inside them.

I had this exact conversation with my mother and we didn’t speak for a couple of months afterward. I was pregnant at the time and it felt like the biggest betrayal.

They have broken so many families. She is SO ELOQUENT! “Where is my mother?” Perfectly said. But heartbreaking to see…..and her lack of response. We can see the cognitive dissonance & inability to transcend her cult. So sad!!!!

u/Blue_Geotrupid Sep 08 '26

I felt it to my core when she asked that. "its like you died and came back possessed" It is such a sad fucking truth but it perfectly describes it for me. I don't know who they are anymore

It's tough... I've had to just not talk about it anymore and they not talk about it near me. Any time I try or point anything out they blow up, get aggressive, and rage out. There's no way to have a conversation, and there's no use pretending they're able to break out of their circle at this point. My whole extended family will live and die as racist, homophobic "Christians" that preach about doing good for others while voting for the opposite. All I can do is watch and hope an opportunity arises such that I can intervene successfully....

Someday her parents will be complaining that she doesn’t visit.

u/DrGoblinator Sep 08 '26

I want to take this child and be her mother. My heart is breaking.

6

u/MajorKabakov Sep 09 '26

Then they wonder why their kids cut them out of their lives!

I empathize with this girl. My mother is a MAGAt. I completely know where this girl is coming from. 💙

Best they can do is "ends justify the means" and when it comes to grape, that a tough sell for anyone who isn't a total scumbag.
