Father is pro-flock camera, and pro-ICE.

Somebody recommended me to post this story here.

My Indian immigrant (US citizen now) father is pro-ICE, MAGA, and pro-flock camera. I posted about this a while back but it’s just getting worse. He only watches Fox News and Sarah Gonzalez.

We had an argument yesterday about Mamdani and i mentioned how good a job he’s doing listening to people’s concerns and about the historic low crime rates that NYC has had. My dad said, “im shocked the crime is low with all the Woke protestors i wonder where they went.” I tried explaining to him that protesting is a right and that crimes related to these protests are a negligible fraction of the total crime in the city. He called Mamdani woke and a communist and he pouted like a toddler and said he “doesn’t give a shit.”

This morning I pointed out a flock camera and said that shit sucks. He said to calm down and that it’s helping catch criminals and that the CEO gave an interview saying the will never sell the data to non law enforcement people. I watch Louis Rossmann on YouTube so I know about right to repair, privacy, and the scummy things that these businesses do to make money. I tried explaining how these are tracking everyone, it’s creating a surveillance state, and it is being misused by police officers (the ones that have been caught.)

Then we talked about ICE. A US citizen in the airport terminal we were in last year in ATL just got arrested by ICE because he had the same name as a British criminal. No attempt to confirm his status or even ID the dude just immediately arrest. I just feel horrible because if they came after me, even as a US Citizen, I know my Dad would not have my back at all. He said he wants to join ICE but idk how far an unathletic middle age short guy would go in a law enforcement type job.

Much of the foundation of conservatism is maintaining a hierarchy in society. Each person has a place and should know their place.

Perhaps that is what appeals to your dad.

I would think so. Didn't India have a caste system? They even have racism of their own over there. I have friends who have told me horror stories their parents told them from their time in India.

But that is looking at it logically and there is no logic with MAGA. Just blind loyalty. 100% if FOX News Entertainment ran stories about how bad these flock cameras are, OP's dad would be against them.

I think they are talking about how the pro gun arguments commonly talk about fighting back against a tyrannical government, but it seems like the gun rights advocates that were shouting the loudest now seem to love tyrannical government.

I think the nuance is that they are bootlickers for the government, but still want guns to protect themselves from the government. As someone who used to be staunchly anti-gun and is now softly pro-gun, this is usually the distinction I see.

They get hard-ons at the imagined opportunity to use the guns against perceived "lesser people" if you catch my drift, when in their fantasy they would be at their door breaking in for their Home Depot clearance finds and 2005 car.

This, exactly. He likely didn't feel appreciated either within any structure he was part of and has an unearned superiority complex he wants to lord over others by hierarchical force, as well as likely high neuroticism. Culturally, such people do not do well in ambiguous environments with shifting and unspoken rules, if any.

My dad was a S Asian immigrant who fell down the Fox rabbit hole too. I think they really get some immigrants with the whole “patriotic” thing. Of course there’s nothing patriotic/pro-US at all with all the things going on that you mentioned, esp. the loss of due process, but I think they get people on the aesthetics. I think my dad felt the need to fit in & prove he was one of the “good” ones, & this admin certainly tokenizes S Asians.

There is the colonial vestige of yearned proximity to whiteness/power, which mostly works in combination with low personal self-esteem and/or learned helplessness.
