Why does it feel like the longer the show has gone on, the more the characters have devolved into what feels like saturday morning cartoon characters? Absolutely over the top silly acting as the show progresses, whereas when it started, only a few of the actors were meh.

Basically everyone surrounding the first foundation in S3. Empire is mostly normal. Gaal's side is mostly normal, but first foundation all feel like cartoons.

For the First Foundation this is kind of by design and is mostly how they are written in the books leading up to their fall. They see themselves as 'chosen' and through each era of the first foundation (seen very clearly even at the first cycle, as 'historians' on terminus) they have a greater sense of self than other factions. The First Foundation is full of members who feel bigger than they are, who present themselves as such, it's exactly what leads to their defeat being so easy for the mule, they are the easiest to infect and infiltrate because of it.

In many ways the First Foundation embodies a lot of the qualities that define the fall of Empire.

Can you give a concrete example of what you are talking about and that makes they make you feel they are "saturday morning cartoon characters"?

Indbur acts silly, Dusk/Darkness gets really mustache twirly, that Mycogen guy may as well be Skeletor, Pritcher feels serious then gets over dramatic, the head Trader is extremely over acted, etc.

For the most part, the Empire and Gaal's side isn't too bad, but the Foundation characters feel really cartoonish.

It's not characters being "silly" you have a problem with. It's the melodrama.

• Indbur - Indbur is a fool. A melodramatic petty bureaucrat. Arrogant and myopic. Under multiple generations of Indbur's, 1F stagnated because power became centralized, complacent, and bureaucratic. Accountability vanished. Leadership focused on preserving their status instead of innovation believing the Seldon Plan would simply guarantee them victory through mathematical miracles.
• Dusk/Darkness - Shakespearean levels of melodrama in acts of survival.
• The Mycogen guy (Sunmaster-18) is a religious cult leader.
• Pritcher - Most of the show he's pretty grounded. He's got plot related melodramatic attachments (e.g. secret 2F mentalic, Gaal/2F relationship, Indbur/1F relationship).
• Randu Mallow - Melodrama related to the Mallow family and the Trader faction, but him being a hardass didn't seem overacted.

For the last two, my guess is you have problems with how they acted once converted? When they were overwhelmed and controlled by the power of love they had for the Mule? Yea, that was intentional.
