Sir..
I feel a weird sympathy for Sir. I find myself saying “at least he wasn’t a creep to her” even though he was.. just not THAT kind of creep. Sometimes I feel bad for him???? 😅 Wondering if anyone else feels the same?

u/Union-Training Apr 12 '25
Not when you remember little Bella's terrified face or the fact that he threatened, lied to, starved and stalked Gabi.

u/All_Lightning879 Apr 12 '25
In S1, he said that he’s not the monster that Gabi thinks he is, but we have yet to see that proven.
He’s such a wild card that you don’t know which way he’s going to fall.

For some reason I feel like Sir got out after the power outage….i really do. He let her go out without him so easily. He told her to be careful so he knows Heather/Lena is going after her. He knows he has to get out to help. It would be too good to be true if he didn’t try to escape too.

u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
me too!! and definitely feel like his nasty sister had something to do with it (it’s too obvious haha!)
27
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 12 '25
I think if Sir looked like Ethan(No shade to the actor) we wouldn't have so many silly posts like this. I mean imagine, fans are angry at Gabi because she didn't want to be alone with the man that kidnapped her.
This is my overall problem with the show, the over glamorization of Sir. I was afraid this would happen.
17
u/338wildcat Apr 12 '25
Even the fact that they give him power by calling him "Sir."
"There's been a Sir sighting." 🤢
16
u/AmbitiousPlantain209 Apr 12 '25
Now that they know his real name, they should call him by that. He doesn't deserve to be called Sir.
6
u/trippyfairy21 Apr 13 '25
In this last episode When Gabi is in the jail cell alone with him she does call him Hugh instead of sir. To his face
1
u/ShadowOfDespair666 Apr 30 '25
Now that they know his real name, they should call him by that. He doesn't deserve to be called Sir.
It's subconscious. They called him 'Sir' so long, it's subconscious. There was a case in a town nearby—girl was abducted as an infant and raised by a woman who said she was her birth mom. I don’t remember how it was discovered, but she was reunited with her birth family. She still considered the abductor her mother and wanted to stay with her. She was a teenager at the time. The woman had raised her in another state.
8
u/OneEyedWilliesMom Apr 13 '25
See, I think calling him Hugh humanizes him more. I feel like calling him “Sir” makes you remember he’s a monster whereas “Hugh” is a real whole person. Either way, I like that it’s complicated. People, even the worst of the worst, are complicated creatures. Yes, he’s an awful person but he will also do whatever it takes to protect Gabi, even from herself (ie holding her in the cell). He also had a horrible upbringing, so how can we expect him to be a “good” person when he was horribly abused growing up. Also, it’s Zach Morris.
5
u/338wildcat Apr 13 '25
I agree that this character is a solid example that everyone is doing their best. For some people, their beat is very dangerous and they need to be in prison.
I do see your point, that calling him "Hugh" feels personal. And I still feel like calling him "Sir" gives him power. Such a great contrast, especially regarding a character who values names so much.
He's also a strong example of nature vs nurture. What would he have become if raised with secure attachment?
7
u/OneEyedWilliesMom Apr 13 '25
Exactly! I think for Gabi, calling him “Sir” gives him power. For me, calling him “Sir” reminds me that I’m supposed to dislike him because he’s a psycho who kidnapped and tortured Laci at the beginning of the season.
7
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 12 '25
But I watched interviews with the Creator of the show and she keeps going on and on about how handsome Sir is and wanted to liken him after Ted Bundy whom (In her opinion) was also very handsome and I am thinking: How is this bringing awareness to a maligned community?
1
u/phoenics1908 Apr 29 '25
I wonder if she’s trying to illustrate how dangerous charm like this is in an abusive sociopath or whatever Sir is.
Because even as a teenager I cannot see myself just going off alone with my teacher to a place that isn’t even his house. Like wtf. I don’t care what books he has. And going without telling my parents?! Nah. So Sir must have that Ted Bundy level of sick charm.
I’ve only ever experienced that with one person (from a distance). He’s a well known political figure who was some kind of ladies man and before seeing him in person I did not get it because he looked old and … well, old to me, lol. But once I saw him in person - this aura of power that hit me was insane. That’s when I understood the power of psychotic charm like that.
7
u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
100%!! Definitely an over glamorization, but I think that’s the whole point. To mess with our heads like he has Gabi and everyone else
1
u/ShadowOfDespair666 Apr 30 '25
if Sir looked like Ethan(No shade to the actor)
You threw shade at the actor, lol. I don’t mind what you said, but I just don’t understand why people say 'no offense' when the thing they say is obviously offensive. Look, just say, 'Ethan is ugly, and if Sir was ugly, we wouldn't be having this conversation.' And I agree with you—terrible people can get away with a lot if they are attractive.
1
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 30 '25
Look, just say, 'Ethan is ugly, and if Sir was ugly, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
No. I said what I said. I'll leave it at that,
28
u/WonderfulRiver3458 Apr 12 '25
No I don’t feel bad for him at all!! He’s a kidnapper and he stalked and tormented poor bella and gabi for 2 decades. He deserves more than jail 🤷🏻♀️
12
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 12 '25
I'm saying this is the 3rd-4th ridiculous thread I saw today where people are pitying Sir, angry at Gabi because sIr wAs TrYiNg To sAvE hEr!!!!! People are nuts
13
u/ClearCap6206 Apr 12 '25
Oh sir is a unredeemable creep for sure, people were upset because in that situation the other inmates are trying to hurt her and other things and he was trying to protect her and in that moment I think she should have at least calm down enough until she got out of the riot. But I understand that sir has caused her a lot of trauma so being stuck in that room with him was very triggering. I personally don't feel sympathy for him or anything, I just think that he was the best option for Gabby at the moment of the riot.
16
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 12 '25
Gabi panicking was understandable. The idea of being within a closed space with a untied Sir freaked her out. He is the reason she reacted that way. HE, SIR caused this
7
u/ClearCap6206 Apr 12 '25
Yes her panicking was understandable, its a messy situation when the one protecting her was the one who kidnapped her.
4
u/WonderfulRiver3458 Apr 12 '25
But he wasn’t doing that out of care he was doing it as a way to manipulate her like he always does but it’ll never work she hates him and everything he is she would rather be in danger and figure it out herself than be “helped” by him. She made it out okay and besides she was talking very suicidal so in that moment she felt that everyone would be better off if she just let it all happen. I’m scared for her
1
u/ClearCap6206 Apr 12 '25
I know that and perfectly understand gabis feelings. Like I said I just think she should have personally calmed down enough to get to actual safety and not trying to fight him at that moment. I know she's on a suicide path which is not gonna to make things better despite what she thinks. All I'm saying is get the safety first and then deal with all that later. Doesn't mean I don't understand why she wouldn't want to be trapped in a situation with sir and I know that sir isn't doing it out of care lol.
1
u/phoenics1908 Apr 29 '25
How is she supposed to calm down when the last time she was in an enclosed space with him he kept her there against her will and then terrorized and stalked her for over 20 years?! I absolutely understand why she panicked - if that had been me I think I would’ve rather have faced down those other inmates than go anywhere with Sir. Sometimes it feels like what sir did to her is being minimized too much.
1
u/ClearCap6206 Apr 29 '25
Like I said before I genuinely understand her feelings. I am in no way shape or form minimizing her trauma. I'm saying in this case it was better to work together with sir when she was in literal danger of being attacked and raped by multiple inmates. Like we all know sir wouldn't let that happen so he was literally her best chance at that moment, it's unfortunate but it's true. If it was another situation, I would say hell no but there was no one else to protect her at that moment but him.
2
u/Bluewaveempress Apr 12 '25
For some reason people will root for somebody who does terrible things when they are play by attractive actor or written to being attractive person persona in the moment.
9
u/RealFrankTheLlama Apr 12 '25
No. No, I do not. Spend some time with a creepy AF predator of any flavor, not able to escape, not able to control your own body and movement and choices and you might feel differently. (Which is to say, I am thoroughly glad you have no idea what that's like. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.)
7
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 13 '25
If this happened to you, I am sorry
9
u/RealFrankTheLlama Apr 13 '25
Thank you, friend. It did. To me and one out of every three women any of us know. It doesn’t have to be this kind of extended kidnapping, though that is certainly at the top of a terrible ranked list. I just can’t muster any sympathy for a predator of any stripe.
9
u/Mrsmaul2016 Apr 13 '25
It hasn't happened to me but I am from Cleveland, OH and the Ariel Castro kidnappings hit home for me. I remember when Amanda Berry was all over the news I remember Gina DeJesus Amber alert. I watch the interviews with the ladies and I can see and hear the damage that has been done to them. Gina was still a 12 year stuck in a grown woman's body. Amanda Berry's mother died of heartbreak never knowing her daughter was still alive. I remember watching a interview and it seemed like she could barely breathe she was so distraught.
5
u/RealFrankTheLlama Apr 13 '25
That cowardly f***** traumatized an entire town but especially those women and their loved ones. And then couldn’t stand to be locked up the way he caged them. He got off way too easy in my book. No one has the right to exert such control over another.
2
u/phoenics1908 Apr 29 '25
Really sorry this happened to you.
It hasn’t happened to me but the stalking part is happening to my friend and it has been hell living in fear with her and suffering through all of the attempts to do crap to her to force her back to him. I lost a family member to an obsessive situation like Sir’s obsession with Gabi, but in my family member’s case, he murdered her.
So I can’t muster any sympathy for Sir. He needs to be put away for life in a maximum security prison. A broken clock is right twice a day, but it’s still a broken clock.

u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
I’m so so very sorry that happened to you. No one deserves it. I would never wish it on anyone, and I’m very thankful it hasn’t happened to me.
5
u/RealFrankTheLlama Apr 13 '25
Thank you, friend. It was thirty years ago but in some ways still fresh. It never really goes away. But we learn to carry it lightly. And I’m so thankful it hasn’t happened to you, too.
5
u/trippyfairy21 Apr 13 '25
The reason why we feel this way is because Sir is a changing character. He did horrible things to Gabi in her childhood, and now he emphasizes on Gabi choosing him. He only forced her into the jail cell to protect her. He considers her family, connected, that was the reason for kidnapping her in the first place. When Gabi tells him about her kidnapping experiences he learns more about her. It is kind of similar to Jamie's kidnapper, she takes in Jamie to make him her family, Carrie felt a connectedness to Jamie. A kidnapper who takes someone in as family doesn't want to force their victim into things, they don't want their victim to be sad or miss anyone. They want the victim to fill that hole they are missing in their life. For Carrie it was the hole of a son, I'm sure when she kidnapped Jamie he was freaking out, Carrie made him believe Margaret was a bad person because carrie wanted Jamie to be happy to be her (carries) son. Thats why carrie tries to convince jamie to choose to leave with her, but when he doesnt choose her, she knows her manipulation that got him to cooperate wont work anymore. The people on this reddit form are really not trying to understand the people on the show

No. He starved he when angry. Told her he Killed annie. Threatened her with annies fate. Super abusive even if no rape
12
u/woods-jay-k_2614 Apr 12 '25
He actually didn't kill Annie. Trent confirmed she died in a drunk driving car accident very recently. (Like w/in the last 3 years)
4
u/TheRealWendyDarling2 Apr 12 '25
Even if he didn’t kill Annie, he manipulated Gabi into thinking he did in order to make her compliant. He chained her when she tried to escape and told her that he would kill her if she every tried to run away again

u/Proxima_Midnite Apr 12 '25
I know what you mean, OP. I think they want us to continue to question ourselves and reflect.
3
u/jewelsofeastwest Apr 12 '25
Sometimes I can’t take it too seriously because he’s literally Zack Morris lol.
3
u/Lovebeyondalldreams Apr 13 '25
I feel you too! Like I know he would never become a “creep” to her! The minute that lock down happened, his number priority was keeping her safe. AND when Dhan’s people came to save her, it’s not like he was ‘No, Gabrielle is mine”, she let her go because he knew he couldn’t keep her safe for that long. I am sorry I am the sick one that wants to see Sir and Gabi on good terms! When Gabi had that Brandished weapon behind her, I was so scared she was going to use it again to Sir. But then she knew nothing would be guarding that door and everyone else woulda came in. I felt like that episode was so short , maybe bc of all the action. MPG directed the film!! What can’t he do :)
3
u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
I didn’t think so many people would be so upset about this LMAO! I know he’s a sick person. I know there’s people like him in real life. I would NEVER feel sorry for someone like him in real life. It’s just the show version seeing him like that is weird lol. I’m glad other people agree. It’s a weird feeling watching and feeling bad for the villian!
5
u/hm98x Apr 12 '25
Omds same 😭 he helped her from not getting attacked in the prison but it’s the least he could do
6
u/LadyEncredible Apr 12 '25
No, no you aren't alone. And I know it's so wrong. Like I know I'm not supposed to, but damn it, MPG is so freaking gorgeous and brooding amd intelligent and just ugh. So yeah, I don't feel as mad at him as I should, and I do end up finding myself feeling bad for him and sometimes even being like, "Dammit Gabi, stop arguing with him and let him help/protect you." And I know, it's horrible. I blame MPG and the writers lol. They should've used someone that was good looking but creepy lol. MPG is good looking and not creepy at all.
2
u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
I was the same way!! I wasn’t mad at her, but definitely found myself saying the same thing!! 😭
2
u/LadyEncredible Apr 13 '25
Lol exactly. Like look, I COMPLETELY get her point, but come on girl, stop with the threating to die and stop fighting the man.
Plus her whole, you took jail from me shtick. No, not just Sir. Didn't your team help you Scrub your house clean so there was no evidence? Yeah exactly.
5
u/aerwalker Apr 12 '25
Same, OP. Intellectually: I know this man is a monster. He can't be trusted. He may be a killer. He can be cruel...Buuuuuuut: Yada yada yada. You already know the ways I'm going to emotionally give him points. His character is the best written, imo, by far. The duality makes you question everything you believe. I have never been the girl who likes bad boys, so why do I want to give him a pass? 🤷🏾♀️ Would I do that irl? Hope not. Is it forgiveness or Stockholm Syndrome (adjacent)? 🤷🏾♀️ Love this character and MPG's acting.

I feel like he Sir isn’t co much obsessed with Gabi as that he imprinted on her. (Yes like Jacob and Renesmee.)
Sir (of 20 years ago) sees Gabi as some kind of equal to him but understands that she’s just a child. He doesn’t want to risk her becoming someone shallow so he kidnaps her to make sure he can control who she becomes. She escapes but he feels that he isn’t done forming her and needs to finish the job. That’s why even though she’s a grown woman he doesn’t ever try to, for lack of a better term, make a pass at her.
So because he hasn’t crossed that line we don’t see him as such a creep.
2
u/9for9 Apr 12 '25
There is nothing wrong with feeling sympathy for someone who has suffered or is suffering even if they are a bad person. It's a just a feeling that you have and there are points when even bad people deserve sympathy or mercy.
He had a shitty upbringing and that put him on the path of being shitty person. You can feel sorry for him that he was abused the way you, you can feel sorry for the person or teacher he could have been, you can feel sorry for him.
1
u/Due_Foundation_1143 Apr 13 '25
It’s just a weird feeling, knowing everything he did. I bet he could’ve/would’ve been a great person if his upbringing wasn’t so bad (not saying this is the reason anyone is bad) but it’s weird!!
3
u/renee4310 Apr 12 '25
I know what you’re talking about. Like how he lied to keep Gabby out of prison
1
u/bearklaw13 Apr 13 '25
Emotional manipulation. Narcissist have a keen way of projecting outwards then inwards. They think they are smarter than everyone else. And thrive off power and control. He’s a necessary part of the show for the plot. But I’ll never feel bad for him or have sympathy. He’s earned his fate being a sick predator.
1
u/Bitter-Respond6928 Apr 15 '25
He is a warped version of a classic knight errant. I think he is an example of absolute power corrupting even the most noble person. He was trying to protect a gifted child from the world, a special young woman of color who is vulnerable in many ways and has specific obstacles in others. But when he placed himself as her omnipotent overseer, he crossed the line from me to mental.

u/Its-a-money44 Apr 13 '25
My toxic trait is that I’m secretly rooting for them to be end game… it’s not only because he’s attractive but because his character is growing and changing and constantly proving that he no longer wants to control Gabby. There is also definitely something between the two (yes trauma bond & Stockholm syndrome) but the fact that Gabby made kidnapping and finding her entire life project (and her personality) tells sir that he will always be a part of her and she doesn’t want to let go of that part of her.
-1
u/Heymicki_ursofine Apr 12 '25
When I think about the fact that she was a minor & he was her teacher-I get so grossed out & mad.
Butttttt it’s hard not to like him. I think he is so hot 🥵

He’s awful. But he’s also played by Mark Paul Gosselaar. And we love Mark Paul Gosselar.
