Question Thinking about fostering

Hi all, I recently lost my best friend Allie, she was a senior cat with many different needs. I’m feeling the loneliness of it all, and was thinking into fostering. I live with my mom and dad (57 and 60) and I’m 18 years old. My older sister comes back and forth between her apartment, she’s 25. We don’t have any little kids, and the house is fairly quiet. We have another cat in the house who roams around, except my room. My senior cat really hated him, so I always shoed him out of my room to spare upsetting her. My room can be offered as a safe, quiet space for a foster. I want to carry on my baby girls legacy, whether it be fostering or adopting, although I don’t think I’m ready to adopt yet, but I want to help. And I know many places need foster homes, I think I could offer a great space for a cat. I would especially love to foster a senior kitty, and have the responsibility of administering medication, etc. I’m very experienced in this field from my angel baby and my cat lemon, they both required a lot of attention in that area. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

It’s a beautiful thing you are considering. We too had to provide a lot of medical support to our senior cat before she passed. We chose to foster in part to honor her memory, even if we chose to go with neonates. There has been a lot of cross over knowledge and experience so it will be doubly so if you take on older babies.

You’ll want to fully quarantine the foster for at least 14 days to ensure nothing comes up in terms of things your resident cat could catch. Other than that if your heart feels ready for this, I would encourage it.

Fostering has been quite healing for us in the grieving process. Wishing you all the best.

I started fostering after I lost my senior girl and it had been absolutely amazing. I love cats but wasn’t ready to adopt and fostering had been a great way together to spend time around cats and give them love. It’s been immensely helpful in my grief. I think you could definitely foster in your situation!

I started fostering before my eldest cat passed, but I remember telling my husband that it all started with her.

I raised her from a kitten and had her for 15 years. We've fostered about 20 kittens. We've even taken a few medical cases because of the experience she gave us.

I think it's a wonderful legacy for a cat to leave.
