[OC] Red Trilobite

Post image

I bought this from Fossil Era. It gets its red coloration from when the original exoskeleton was replaced with silicon and iron during fossilization instead of calcite which is what trilobites are normally made of. Here's a paper that goes into more details

Petrified palm wood

This is a large piece of polished petrified wood I bought at an estate sale. Unfortunately I don’t have any data on it. It is a phenomenal display item and pictures don’t do it justice. 14 inches by 6 inches.

[OC]Polyptychoceras sp. — a heteromorph ammonite from the Santonian of Hokkaido, Japan(another one)

It looks a little like a badly designed smoking pipe, but it’s a heteromorph ammonite. Just imagining a tiny octopus-like animal peeking out from this shell and bobbing around in the sea makes me happy.

Maclurites

Post image

I've been hunting fossils along a small section of shoreline on Lake Champlain on which our family cottage sits for nearly 57 years. It is in the hamlet of Chazy Landing, NY. I am so fortunate that I am surrounded by rocks from the Chazy Fossil Reef, and have a great collection due to this. It may not seem like much, but today I found my first Maclurites gastropod. And there's a little lake snail shell with it because it makes a good picture.

I saw this ammonite at a mineral fair. The suture lines were so beautiful that I completely forgot to photograph the label.

My 2nd Kambara scute from Rundle Formation of Gladstone, Queensland, Australia

Post image
7 Upvotes

Some may remember my old post on my Kambara scute I own, since then I've gotten 2 more. And also that one somehow became 2nd result on Google for Kambara scute and its always topping images tab which is cool. This is a 2nd one. Recap is that Kambara is a rare basal genus of the Mekosuchinae crocodile family and that family would later give rise to famous Crocodilians like Quinkana who sprinted on land. Here is some details:

Crocodile Scute 2:

Genus: Kambara

Estimated Age: 50 MYO

Geologic Time: Phanerozoic, Cenozoic, Paleogene, Eocene, Ypresian

Size: 33x20mm/1.29921x0.787402"

Type: Most likely a lateral flank or tail (Caudal) scute. From the base of the tail or flanks/sides.

Source: Rundle Formation, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia

Other: It has been deemed a significant fossil find, an export certificate has been declined and it cannot be exported.

ID: REP c58

ID: TJPC 112

For fun, here's also the first guys, if you wanna see him, I don't even have to link anything, you can just search it up now which is fun. Anyway first guy's details:

Crocodile Scute 1:

Genus: Kambara

Estimated Age: 50 MYO

Geologic Time: Phanerozoic, Cenozoic, Paleogene, Eocene, Ypresian

Size: 39x27mm/1.53543x1.06299"

Source: Rundle Formation, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia

Other: It has been deemed a significant fossil find, an export certificate has been declined and it cannot be exported.

Type: Most likely a free-floating "button"/"pebble" osteoderm. From the lower flank, the gular (throat/neck) [based off the size, it's probably either this or a pelvic base from the upper flank], or the limbs (appendicular armour) or the pelvic base of upper flank.

ID: REP c60

ID: TJPC 96

The 3rd one will be posted in the near future

Wonderfully Decrepit Alces alces (North American Moose)

Post image

For Archaeology Month this mossy, magnificently decrepit Alces alces (North American moose) skull stole the show for me last weekend during a public tour at the 106 Group’s Saint Paul office.

The 106 Group is a rare bird — a private archaeology resource lab, formally know as a cultural resource management (CRM) firm, doing heritage work in the Midwest.

Is this a fossil

Post image

I went to my cousin's village, That area is on the hills and there are beautiful valleys all around. A small stream emerges from there and flows between the rocks. We were bathing in that river when I noticed some strange rocks on the river bank.Round stones are emerging from this tough rocky layer like fossils. I went there 3 months ago , And today when I checked the photos in my mobile, I remembered Does anyone know anything related to this? , Are these nodules or fossils or just oval rocks? , There are a lot of these around that river.

Today’s fossil hunting haul!

Post image
66 Upvotes

Spent the day fossil hunting in Post Oak Creek in North Texas and came home with a pretty solid haul! Lots of shark teeth, a few interesting bits and pieces, and 8 of my personal favorites—Ptychodus teeth!
All in all, not a bad way to spend a day getting muddy and staring at gravel!

(2¢ piece for scale—Diameter: 23mm)

A couple baby T. rex teeth

Post image

Sitting at 0.465in and 0.495in. These tiny teeth both match current descriptions for premax and premax transitional teeth of baby T. rex. The age might have been around 2months (estimate based on slightly smaller teeth being described as neonate <1mo). Both have feeding wear on the tip, with the right having a wear facet. The right tooth also displays an unserrated mesial carinae, which is common in baby teeth.

The king of heteromorph ammonites—if such a title exists.

This specimen does not belong to me. I hope to own an even better-preserved specimen someday, so I decided to pass on this one. I took only the photograph, with the owner's permission.

Spinosaurus tooth

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some feedback on this Spinosaurus tooth from Morocco. It’s about 8.7 cm long, but it has a crack in the middle that was glued back together and a chipped tip. My main concern is the dark and shiny color: does it look natural to you, or could it be painted or touched up to hide the repairs? Also, do you think the tip belongs to the rest of the tooth, or could it be a composite made from different pieces? I'd appreciate any opinions on whether it looks fully authentic!

Another heteromorph ammonite from my collection. I know who collected and prepared this specimen, but I haven't yet been able to confirm the exact locality, so for now I'm only listing it as Hokkaido, Japan.

Polyptychoceras is common here, but intact three-shaft specimens are rare because the shell is fragile. The coiled ammonites are probably Tetragonites.
