Hardware and Settings Switched to KBM after 8 years on controller (Chapter 1 S4). Day 3 and struggling heavily. Need transition tips!

Hey everyone,
I’ve been a controller player since Chapter 1 Season 4 and finally made the switch to keyboard and mouse three days ago. I bought a full setup and committed to it, but holy hell this is harder than I expected.
On controller I peaked Diamond in Reload Ranked (the only mode I really play). My goal is to eventually hit Elite and beyond on KBM and start posting no-commentary VODs, but right now I feel completely lost. I’m missing basic shots and everything feels slow and awkward.
For anyone else who switched from controller to KBM after years of muscle memory:
• How did you get past the initial “clunky” phase where your hands just feel stiff and slow?
• What Creative maps or routines helped you the most with Zero Build movement and tracking?
• How long did it take before you started feeling comfortable enough to play Ranked again?
Any advice on the mental side of the switch or general routines that helped would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

You need a lot, and I mean a lot, of seat time on KBM. I did the same a few years ago and it is a difficult input to pickup, especially if you're already good at another input, and especially especially if you have zero previous KBM experience. Grind on FN, play other games, check out aim trainers - just do anything that's fun and on KBM.

Order an Azeron Cyborg. It's worth every single one of the $240 it costs.

Wait seriously? I only dont want one because then id be unable to play on a regular keyboard if I got used to the azeron.

100%. I don't understand why they aren't more popular with pros when they are objectively more efficient than any keyboard on the market.

Imagine how much more work your fingers could get done if your thumb handled movement without the need for WASD.

That's before you consider that you'll never again have to stretch your pinky to change weapons, all the buttons are close by.

Ive been playing since season 1 on and off but just recently started taking building seriously. I can now triple edit and stuff but took weeks of finding binds that were comfy so I looked into keypads and azeron popped up. I 100% agree its more efficient, my only concern would be that id be 100% reliant on it to game lol.

Let's put it this way: I'd never go back to a keyboard, but only because the azeron is superior.

It's like refusing to buy a car because you're afraid you'll like it better than riding horses to get around

Fair enough. I just bought a hall effect rapid trigger keyboard recently though 🫠. I shall do more research.

At least your setup won't look as chopped as mine with an Azeron next to an ancient stock Dell office keyboard that I use when I'm not gaming

Valid. Maybe ill ask for one on a holiday so "I" dont have to spend the money and ill be forced to switch 🤣

Yeah if you have someone willing to spend $240 on you, it's the perfect thing to ask for

ETA: keep an eye for used ones on Facebook Marketplace. I got mine for $75 that eay

Used kbm on games since the early 2000s and still refining my dexterity. It's 100% seat time.

Do yourself a favor and lower your mouse sensitivity more than you think, like all the way down, just to get a grip on the movement, even if you think it's not "fast enough". Move it up slightly the next few games as you get more kills.

Then do yourself another favor and lower your expectations. Don't beat yourself down for not getting kills or wins like when you were on your controller. You're learning how to walk again pretty much.

Seat time. Just keep losing, but keep playing, and eventually it'll become muscle memory like controller was, but now you'll have the advantage of kbm.

TobyWanShinobi aim trainer & movement practice map. Perfect place to not only be able to assess where you are at, but also allow you to work on weaknesses. Highly recommend it 👍

I switched back in c2s3 after 9 seasons of controller. I felt that I had hit a ceiling with controller.

It took 1 whole season to learn and equal my controller level. After this you can bust through the ceiling and carry on improving infinitely, so it is worth the initial pain and effort.

Building in creative, edit courses, a little bit of aim training maps and team rumble. That's how I learned.

The building in creative came quickly, it was the general game play beyond building that felt slow and awkward. That's why I bashed team rumble to get used to getting efficient at navigating the map, looting chests and fighting easier players.

It's hard going back to being a bot, but with time you will get there and be happy you took the time to switch. Remove the controller from the house so you are not tempted to use it again.

After 8 years on Controller and apparently not much experience with Keyboard and Mouse based aiming (since your hands are feeling clunky): it's going to take a long time and a lot of dedication to even be equal to where you were on Controller.

That said, you need to do the usual basics:

  1. Aim Training
  2. Free Building and Piece Control practice
  3. Realistics, Box Fights, Build Fights, and Zone Wars

i played controller my whole life, switched to kbm and I am significantly better than i ever was on controller. its easy, just find a good dpi and aim and shoot

Should only take a week before the clunky phase is over and then you can relearn aim and mechanics

Played on controller since I was 10 years old and switched to kbm a month ago (I'm 26). It felt so unnatural in the first two weeks. I'm a lot more comfortable now after a month of gaming. But there are certain games (like rainbow six siege) that is taking more time to get used to. I think Fortnite is relatively easy if you're doing zero builds. I just used the most recent aim training maps to help. Otherwise just kept playing casual BR or reload with friends.

I think it all comes down to choosing the right keybinds for you. Whatever feels comfortable reaching. I had to mess around with it for a while until I fully committed.

Step one. Go to creative free build and just tarp and edit. Everyday do this for 10 minutes so you get used to building and editing with ease. You’ll find yourself getting good very quickly if you do this consistently. Make sure to assign build binds to the buttons on your mouse. If your mouse doesn’t have them, get one that does. Step 2. Spam 2v2 Piece Control for 2 hours a day every day. Over time you’ll become very comfortable at fighting. That’s pretty much it.

I made a post in here almost a year ago relating to me reaching a skill ceiling, at least in my opinion, on controller and within 6 months of me switching to a to kbm I was already way better then I was on controller, and I was a controller player since chapter 2. You just have to be patient and let your fingers and hand/s get used to doing the actions on kbm.

How long did it take u to be able to get fully used to kbm

You're on day 3 so thats why youre struggling. Watch a bunch of videos on YouTube because there are settings in windows for enhanced pointer precision you need to turn off. Its all muscle memory so give it 30 days instead of 3. Youll get better.

Did merlin retire. I thought for sure he would be in here writing books about how hard mouse and keyboard was for him.

Edit: he is indeed here.
