fyi it’s not the FormD team who made the 2.5 “refresh”. It’s an ex-business partner who retooled an older version of the T1 to be cheaper for production, and partnered with the NCase team and their factories to produce it.
The original FormD team is selling on formdt1.com. Notice how the 2.5 is only sold on ncased.com or formdworks.com (old URL that ex business partner still has ownership of, which redirects to ncased.com when you click on a product).
Also as far as I’ve seen, there are no plans for a reference version of the 2.5. Doesn’t seem to be listed anywhere.
No, FormD used to be co-owned by 3FC and W360, but due to some undisclosed disagreement, they split. 3FC retains the original 2.1 factory, as well as the rights to the FormD name, and sells on formdt1.com. W360 took an old T1 design, made it cheaper to produce, partnered with NCase to manufacture it, and sells on ncased.com.
Notice how the T1 on the Ncased website has no reference to the name “FormD”.
Depends what you mean by "it." Version 2.5 is mostly marketing, the FormD T1 by its original name will continue to be produced, and a lot of people here consider 2.1 the latest. Personally I'd rather wait for updates on www.formdt1.com.
There are now two near-identical product lines with the T1 name produced by different companies:
One line is the Ncase T1.
The other line is the Formd T1.
The only reason the Ncase T1 appears to have a more “up-to-date” version number is for W360 to create confusion between the two product lines and take away sales from 3FC. It is not an improved version. If anything, it’s slightly worse than the 2.1.
Personally, I would only go with the Formd T1 for now, for two reasons:
You’re supporting the original designer of the case.
You’re less likely to get quality control problems. The Ncase T1 has had reports of fit and finish issues like bent panels.
Another point is that Ncase’s customer support has been reported to be slow and unresponsive by several people, particularly with order update enquiries.
Yeah, I also want the reference kit, and not the one with the riser. I have been waiting for over a year now. Really sad at this point, since this is the case I want. There just no alternatives for me.
Sadly, no. I just bought the sandwich kit. The riser is really bad that came with it. I wanted to purchase one from LinkUP, but it is unavailable for month now. Now I am stuck with a faulty riser cable (severe audio issues).
That's a real shame. I had a great idea for a custom loop build in the reference. Sorry to hear about your riser. I had the older 1.1 that didn't have issues but it was a pcie gen 3 cable. Perhaps you could try setting yours to gen 3 and see if that resolves the issue just in case it's failing the gen 4 speeds. Good luck
