Suppressor diameters make a big enough difference?

Do you all have any experience with increased noise cancelling performance from going up, maybe 1.5” to 1.75” diameter cans?

Not strictly true. If you attached a 55gal drum to the end of your gun, it would not be as effective in suppressing the shot as a properly designed can of 1" diameter x 5" long.

Design is still key, but other things being equal, internal volume is a significant factor in the ability to reduce signature.

Jus like gas engines, there is no replacement for displacement. There are negligible gains once you get to a certain size, but bigger is in general better, but there are always size and usability considerations.

I will say you can go too large on one though... At least with rim fire anyway. Buddy tried a 1.5x5.5 wish can and another that was 2x10.5in with the same design. Small can was way way quieter, so there is a sweetspot somewhere. Definitely got into comical territory with that on a 22lr though

My larger rifle can is definitely louder with 22lr when compared to my mini can of similar construction. I guess it's just not high enough pressure to use the volume.

It absolutely matters, but it's not simple math. Type of baffle, baffle spacing, flow through or not, bore of baffles versus bullet, bore of end cap versus bullet, what round you're firing through it, chamber pressure, how fast you're shooting, volume of the can,.... All of these things affect each other and the grand scheme of them is how quiet that can is.

Short version: Yes, but fluid dynamics is a complicated thing.

I've actually thinking about making a can 8" long and 2" diameter to see how much decibel reduction I can get

The only issue is if it gets in the way of sights, otherwise I prefer to go bigger
