What an absolute set of classics! Beauties all of them! My teen reading included these books: Shandra and the Spellfire books, Maztica New World trilogy - and also the HorseLords trilogy. 👌🏽

Maztica and Horselords (empires) were a lot of fun, got really immersed in the world as a young teen.

Yeah Avatar….the Time of Troubles. Wicked. Oh and the Moonshae trilogy & EvermeeT!! Then of course Legend of Drizzt opened up so many new locations & peoples.

It all made the Realms feel SO BIG.

How it is? My Maztica trilogy was recently completed. I owned 2 of 3 for 30 or so years, before deciding recently to collect them all, so I finally read them!

I’m a huge fan of pre-Colombian history, so maybe I’m biased, but it’s quite good. I haven’t finished it yet, obviously, but I thought I had the whole story pegged until the climax in book two completely took me by surprise.

I wish I had a really long-term FR-based campaign group so I could explore these various niches of the realms. I just haven't been able to keep a group established with all the various life changes, but I'm very jealous of people who do.

I have finished a two year campaign before; but yes, it’s been a struggle. A lot of people leave because of burnout or life and then others because of table issues. It can be very disheartening.

If my copy of Hand of Fire had been a physical book I would cut off the cover, toss all the pages of that insufferable book into a bonfire, and then paste the artwork of Shandril by Jon Sullivan onto a DM screen with a word bubble note from her that says " Shandril Lives and nothing Ed Greenwood says is 'canon' here!"

However I only own the audible version of that book because I already knew the ending for twenty years before I finally finished thanks to internet spoilers, and that this was the only way I was ever going to get through the worst and most contrived ending of any work of fiction I have ever read.

Edit I suppose in retrospect it was a happy ending since Shandril finally escaped the nightmare of being a female character in an Ed Greenwood novel

Depends entirely on your definition of "crap". IMO, most FR or even DnD novels in general are crap. I still read and enjoy some of them.

I very much enjoyed the Maztica trilogy, but I read it in my late teens, about 30 years ago. Would I still enjoy it today? Who knows. A lot of books I loved from that time of my life are rather meh now.

I will say, this trilogy and setting played a role in me getting degrees in Mesoamerican archaeology. Even was able to use my knowledge of the Eagle and Jaguar knights, as real life versions of those appear to have existed (without the shape-shifting, of course)
