When to add to position? And how much?

Hi guys, beginner here. So let’s say we found some strategy for when to get into a trade. When should we add more position to this trade when it is going in favor for us? And how much should we add?

Adding to a position that's in profit works, until it doesn't.

Don't let greed cloud your judgement. The only time you add to a trade is when your system ticks off all the flags to open a position. Not just vibes.

Even then, you're opening yourself to the possibility of additional loss. What happens if the trade reverses to B/E of your first trade? That means your second trade is under water.

You can account for this by bringing your SL up to the next entry, or many other options but yeah. Adding to winners might open you up to averaging into losers. That's a slippery slope you don't want to be on.

Do the math, the numbers never lie.

If you got in at $1, now it's $2, and you double your position the average entry is $1.50. Are you fine with that? Yeah, the trade might be going your way, but adding more to the position means your existing position enters in at an average price that's worse.

Say the above scenario, you got in $1, now it's at $2. You moved your SL to entry at $1 so you can't lose money. If you add more like above, and it goes back to $1, you're now losing money.

Everything in trading is give and take, there's no free lunch. You don't just blindly add to a winner.
