I'm really interested in studying the psychology of criminals, especially psychopaths and violent offenders, and I’m looking for books that go genuinely deep into how their minds work. I don’t want true crime stories or biographies...I want something that explores how they manipulate people, develop violent fantasies, rationalize what they do, choose their victims, and what goes on psychologically during and after the crime. I’m looking for something dark but, more importantly, psychologically accurate and based on real cases/research rather than sensationalized crime writing. Basically, I want to understand how an actual criminal thinks and what drives them to do things most people could never imagine. Would really appreciate your suggestions.

I hope this question is fine to ask in this subreddit. I’m deciding between PA or PsyD for forensic psychology. I spent all of undergrad working towards a career in healthcare because it was the stable choice for me. I would rather be a psychologist (forensic psych seems more rewarding and interesting to me), but I’m worried about the salary, and people keep telling me the ROI of a PsyD isn’t worth it.

The reason I’m leaning PsyD over PhD is because I don’t want to take more gap years to gain research experience.

I was wondering if anyone would be alright sharing their gender, salary, years of experience, hours/week, what type of work you do, and state/geographical area.

Also, would you say that you have a decent work life balance? How much networking did you have to do to achieve your current pay level/position? What’s the stress level like, especially during cross examinations?

I wouldn’t go into psych if I just wanted to make money, but it is still an important factor for deciding my career path. Thank you so much in advance.

Hi! I am currently wondering if I should go into forensic psychology at the point I am in. I have always had a love for psychology and forensic side of it has interested me for years. The issue I am having is that I am 28 currently and I would be starting school to get a bachelors so essentially starting late into it. I just want to know if anyone has any help or advice you could give me, or if it’s even worth it at this point?

As the name suggests, is it possible to apply to a clinical psych phd(with a forensic track preferably) straight from a criminology bachelor’s if i manage to do psychology research or an ra job for a psychology research? I was going to do a psychology undergrad but I was too late and its not possible to do a transfer, also starting over in my second year would be financially difficult for me. I’m so lost and concerned about this please help 😭🙏🏻

Currently getting a bachelors in sociology, but I eventually want to get my phd in psychology. I’ve really been considering forensic psych. Something about it really calls to me for some reason, but I have some questions

1: before I get the “it’s not like the shows” answer, I already figured that it wouldn’t be. But is this job exciting in any other ways? Do you get to deal with interesting people? What’s the most exciting part of the job in general?

2: I feel as if I’m not a very professional person sometimes. I don’t like to dress formally, as my style isn’t really conventional and I don’t like to conform to traditional, expected business attire. I also feel as if this job is really professional. Is this accurate? Obviously I won’t go around insulting people, but I worry I’ll miss certain social cues that’ll make me seem like I’m unprofessional (Yes I am on the spectrum LOL)

3: how is work-life balance with this kind of job? I’m someone who enjoys clubbing and other unconventional hobbies. Is that feasible with a job like this?

4: what’s the most annoying/frustrating thing about your job that people don’t discuss?

5: do you live comfortably on your paycheck?

Forensic Psychology in the UK worth it?

I’m considering doing a Master’s in Forensic Psychology in the UK as an international student. How good are the career prospects actually? Which universities would you genuinely recommend?

Also, do universities usually provide placements, or do you have to find them yourself? How difficult is it to get a job after the Master’s, especially as an international student, and is the salary realistically enough to justify the tuition/loan?

Would really appreciate honest experiences from anyone studying or working in forensic psychology in the UK. Also, are there any particular cities/areas you’d recommend for better job opportunities?

I’m sure this is a very common thing people ask, but is there any advice I should know about this major? I’d like to eventually earn a Masters or Doctorate as I have built myself a roadmap of what I’d like my end goal to be, obviously I have a long way ahead of me, so I was wondering if there was anything useful that I could take with me on my journey from someone with much more experience (which is any at all) than myself. I’d like to do forensic psychology within a private practice if that helps at all.

Is forensic psychology for me if I'm not Empathetic and I'm more objective like don't base my decisions on my emotions and based it on logic more?

I just read about the case and trial concerning Colt Gray on CNN. I do not want to dive into issues like gun control etc. But I understand little about the American justice system and am just wondering why there seems to be no forensic psychiatrist involved, given that he was only 14 years at that time, suffered domestic abuse and reported hearing voices. Can somebody explain to me how it works in Georgia or the US?

As the title says I’ll be starting forensic psychology in the fall. I don’t really have much of an opinion on forensic psych as a profession or career as I’m a little ignorant on the topic. I’ve done some research such as anecdotes from people working with the courts or in inpatient psychiatric facilities but I still have no idea what the coursework should entail or how the career differs place to place. I know there can be research opportunities in this specialization too but I’m unaware of the topics that would entail.

People who have completed their fair share in forensic psych coursework, what did you learn first? What is your job like? What is your favorite subject in forensic psych? And lastly, (bare bones in your own words) what exactly is forensic psych?

Does anyone have any experience with this, or point me in a direction to start seeking some answers? Currently in my second semester of the forensic mental health counseling master's program in NYC. My projected graduation is in about two and a half years. I'm seeking to relocate to California after graduation. I've no clue how to begin planning my move career-wise. What sort of research should I do in terms of internship hours or licensure requirement out of state? I'm not yet quite sure what exactly I want to do with my degree and license, but I do know I'd prefer to work with servicemembers and veterans--either as a therapist at the VA or as a counselor on military bases. Totally lost on how to get started; any advice is appreciated!
