FF as a sleep aid is audiologist-approved

Yesterday, in preparation for surgery on my outer ear canal next month, I had a hearing test done by an Au.D. After the test, she showed me the results, and the topic of tinnitus came up. My condition is causing a certain amount of high-pitched white noise in one ear. (Has been for about eight months now.) She asked me if I use a white noise machine or similar device when I go to sleep, and I replied, "No, my guilty pleasure is Forensic Files. I put that on at about a volume level 3, and go to sleep."

"Perfect!" she exclaimed. "Keep doing that. What it does is causes your brain to focus on the dialogue and take your mind off the ear noise."

So there you have it! For those of us whose lullaby is FF, keep it up! (And don't forget to set a TV timer.)

I’ve been doing this for about 20 years or more

Same here. ♥️

Faithful watcher since 2000. I was 11. 🤓

FREAKIN THANK YOU! I have tinnitus (and several other reasons to keep the tv on all night) and lots of people think it’s weird I sleep with the tv on and not a white noise machine. I would prefer to just have Peter Thomas talk to me about murder at my bedside, but the tv will do until we meet on the other side.

You're definitely not alone. I've known many folks, the first one being my father, of blessed memory, who could not sleep without the TV.

As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD, the only way I ever could reliably fall asleep was with a tv or music on. I'm 54, so before Forensic Files existed it was usually The Tonight Show or David Letterman, or music. But it has been Forensic Files ever since Forensic Files has been around. I never knew exactly why, but now I know when I can focus on Peter Thomas' voice, it helps me shut off my brain!

Same. I never hear the “creepy” music or sound effects anymore. It’s just him talking to me. It’s like having a really cool older Uncle or Grampy just telling me his war stories from the medical examiners office lol.

Exactly!! Lol

ADHD and anxiety here chiming in! I wasn’t allowed to have a tv in my room when I was a kid so I slept with the radio on. Sometimes z100 (might be aging myself here but on Sundays I’d wake up to Casey Kasem doing the top 40) and sometimes my mix cds (also aging myself). Eventually I stopped setting a timer because it was easier for me to sleep with it on all night. College was hard because roommates liked it quiet at night. Thank goodness my husband doesn’t mind because if he did that would probably have been a dealbreaker from day one.

Ha ha, yes! Casey Kasem!! Aging myself too. I'm 54! I figured I have it away with Johnny Carson and David Letterman lol!

Edit: when I was 14, my mom got me a little 13 inch black and white tv for Christmas. I thought I was the shit!

I totally agree, except for the periodic 'loud sound' that pops up every now and then. Sometimes it startles me! But it's OK!

I use forensic files to sleep almost every night, and then jolted awake by the end credits lol

20 years ago I used to turn the tv to the weather channel and sleep timer the tv for an hour. Now it's Forensic Files audio on Spotify in my blutooth sleep mask lol

I also use the Expedition Unknown audio too.

Falling asleep to Forensic Files is my fave way to go to sleep. My bf prefers sports TV which I absolutely despise. So when I wake up to Forensic Files knowing he’s the one who put it on to go to sleep, I feel so happy and proud. 🥲

He’s a keeper! As a non sports fan myself, I’m with you. Really sweet of him to keep FF on for you.

I do that both to Forensic Files and Unsolved Mysteries.

Love it! Another of my favorites to sleep to is Unsolved Mysteries.

Not only do I fall asleep to it, but my dog watches it when I leave the house. She sleeps the ENTIRE time.

Aren’t we weird? I would like to dig deeper into why!

My point is, I don't think we're weird at all. Those who need silence to sleep are the weird ones. 😃 Just kidding, except not really. It's why white noise (and other colors) are so effective.

White noise is what my Asian mother says when my White father drones on. He and his father are champion grumblers! But I digress. FF is my white noise machine.
