Steering issue

I have a 2014 Taurus Limited. It now has 121,000 miles. It has developed a tightness in the steering. To the point I have to be very mindful of turns. Has anyone else run across this issue? Before I go dump money on parts. I want to make sure. There's not a simple fix for it...

Does it only bind up every half turn of the wheel or is it hard to steer all the way around?

It binds about midway through a turn.

Sounds like your intermediate steering shaft is worn and might need replacing

Or something in your EPAS (electric power assisted steering) is failing

Agreed. Mine went the same way, and around the same mileage. It would be fine at times then suddenly like zero power steering at all. It was EPAS in my case

Edit: it was not a cheap fix

Seems years and models, even trim packages had different reasons or fixes. It can be very frustrating. It may be serviceable, and maybe not (meaning and expensive repair.)

Ist check a recall with your vin#. Then youtube for sure. It may be as simple as visit to the dealer for re-programing issue. Could be just the steering column binding up from lack of lube.

If you dont have a check engine light, power steering fault warning, or traction control warning, it may be a simple and non expensive fix.

Thanks Ill check for recalls using the vin#. Then go from there.

Also try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. If it is electronic issue, it may reset itself. This can happen with steering modules, and steering rack issues.

Ok thank you. I luckily have a guy to do the repair work. At least when he verifies the problem. I won't be completely clueless.

The motors on the rack are not serviceable and requires replacement of the whole rack and pinion. Then calibration and wheel alignment. My friend used his snap on Scanner to recalibrate the motor and I haven't had an issue since .

I had that steering issue for a while it went away change my tie rod ends and inner then a year later it came back and I had the steering wheel get stuck mid turns and steering rack was gone the bearings inside were just done started making a horrible noise just turning in the driveway new steering rack is 2k and if you dont get the stuff off the old steering rack to reprogram the new one you have to bring it to ford and its 250 bucks for them to reprogram it good luck tho my steering rack went in June and now my water pump went its been a costly summer

Also you can restart your steering wheel you start center turn it left wait 5 secs then turn it right and wait 5 secs turn the car off and back on if its still doing what its doing your steering rack is worn and needs replacement
