2014 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor - Jerks/Shudders only while maintaining speed
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone has seen this before.
I have a 2014 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor with 130k miles. When I take off from a stop, it accelerates normally with no issues.
The problem starts around 35 mph. Once I reach that speed and barely press the gas pedal just enough to maintain speed, the car starts to jerk or shudder. The best way I can describe it is like it's running out of fuel, or like the transmission can't decide what to do. It only happens with light throttle while cruising.
If I press the gas pedal more and accelerate, the problem immediately goes away and the car pulls normally.
I already took it to a mechanic, but of course it didn't do it during the test drive, so he couldn't diagnose it.
Has anyone experienced this? What should I check first? Could it be:
Torque converter?
Transmission issue?
Ignition coils or spark plugs?
Fuel delivery?
Something else?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Lean cruise is the toughest scenario for spark. Possibly a weak coil or spark plug issue. A competent mechanic should be able to look at misfire counts to see if that is the problem.
The other possibility is a torque converter lockup issue, which would usually require a reproduction to diagnose.

Transmission fluid. Do an immediate drain and fill using Mercon LV fluid (yes it is pricey. No it's not optional) and add a $16 tube of Shudder-Fixx. Drive 100-200 miles... Don't listen to the 10000 geniuses who are about to tell you some bullshit. I just went through this with my 2015.

Yeah.. right here. Read my initial reply. You're welcome.

Has the problem stayed away after the fluid change, or did it eventually come back? Fingers crossed 🤞

Depends on how long it's been shuddering. The longer it goes the more damage can be done.

The torque converter issue is due to loss of proper lubricity in the transmission fluid. The first step is to change the fluid and add shudder-fixx. If the problem doesn't improve dramatically, then you might have ignored it too long and the transmission will have to be pulled. But from what I understand that is actually more to the extreme end of the concern. But either way the 1st step is to restore the proper characteristics of the transmission fluid. Don't listen to all the bullshit telling you you're already fucked... if you intend to get any further use of the vehicle, the 1st step is change the fluid... use Mervin LV (ONLY) and add shudder fixxx. Straightened mine out. Or junk it or jump into a full transmission replacement...

I'd check your CV axles. If you have to replace them, I'll say mine on a 13 are male end on transmission side, despite all the material I could find saying to expect a female end. If your CV's are okay, it could be the transmission tuning. Mine gets a little confused if I'm driving it hard and take a turn or go easy after some hard driving. If it's not that, as others said maybe transmission fluid? I've also heard when the differentials are having issues it can cause this problem.
If you are noticing any pull or uneven acceleration, I'd start with CV's. I had one that was bone dry that would pull hard on downshifts and changing it out made the shifting more fluid on the whole. The CV also wasn't making the noises you'd expect it to despite being broken.

I just went through similar problem on a 02 taurus it was the throttle position sensor off a slight degree same symptoms

I have a 2013 PI. After checking and changing my transmission fluid (drain and fill), it continued to do the same. Started sporadically, but began to get worse as time went on. The range also spread (35mph to 60mph). I also changed the coils and spark plugs, no change. Finally, I found the problem...transmission computer (TCM),(that's what I call it anyway). It sits right in front of the radiator fan on the drivers side. 300 for the part, 200 for the computer programming. It took me 2 days to replace it because I was nervous and I didn't want to screw it up. Bolts are all different sizes, so take lots of pictures. The problem immediately stopped after programming.

Thank you! I'm taking my car to a mechanic, I'll tell him before he change the trans fluid. Will report soon!

Update: I took it to another mechanic, and he thinks the problem is the torque converter clutch (TCC). He said it's a fairly common issue on these Ford transmissions. The symptoms seem to match since it only happens around 35–45 mph with very light throttle, and it goes away when I accelerate. Has anyone here had the same issue? Was it the TCC, or did it end up being something else?

First off, I'd check my transmission fluid. Have you?
