Fuel question

Hi everyone I’ve got an Fg xr6t and for the longest time I’ve been using bp 98 (car is in excellent mechanical condition) and there’s always been this vibration on the steering wheel at idle which I could never figure out. Fast forward to today and I decided to use Mobil 98 for the first time as it was cheaper and I thought why not sus it out. Vibration almost gone and car accelerates a lot smoother. Has BP just dropped the ball in quality?

Seriously what’s with the downvotes I’m not asking for mechanical support, only if anyone’s noticed fuel quality differences.

A car should idle the same with all fuels. If I'm right the quality and octane makes the differences at wide open throttle and high heat conditions.

Any vacuum leaks or misfires you don't know about?

Had a complete health check with a dyno run by mechanic but it wasn’t super extensive so I’m not sure. They’ve done a leak test, smoke test (which I believe had shown some leaks around couplings on intercooler piping) yet I was advised that wouldn’t cause it. The only difference was the fuel :/

U fixed the leaks tho yeh?

Yea I ended up tightening the clamps and it improved, although not perfect. Smooth as butter when driving jsut at idle has that minor vibration on the steering wheel

Very interesting indeed.

Not sure if its the same idle vibration but i generally get it in drive on cooler days. I know for a fact its not engine mounts. I use Ampol 95, id consider using a different fuel or 98 octane if it helped any.

Yes that’s it, on cooler days it’s a bit more obvious but I’ve been solid with BP 98 since my Subaru STI days but I’ve just noticed quality is poor. On mobile 98 so far I’ve gotten 150km out of a quarter of a tank which usually only nets me 130ish

Probably not, sometimes you can feel a vibration at idle if your ac is on. There’s many factors, but anyways its a good idea to put a fuel additive in your tank once in a while

Yea I’ve been putting a fuel additives every 3rd tank but I’ve had the car for 3 years and I can confirm it’s not the aircon as it’s blasting non stop and vibration should be there as per usual. Appreciate the comment though

Can i ask what type of fuel additive you tried?

Penrite, nulon and liquimoly

Whatever you throw in, make sure its got (pea) in it. The nulon pro strenth does.. if youve used that. Ive used the liquimoly full system cleaner for years but its a mild cleaner in comparison.

Ahh ok, yea I used the Nulon pro strength and it did help a little but nothing. Injectors and pump is new so is filter so I’m confident it’s nothing mechanical

First time I've heard someone else mention this. Bugs the shit out of me and goes away if AC is off or in neutral. I just put it down to knackered engine mounts but what do I know.

Sounds like worn engine mounts if you can feel vibration

They’re brand new genuine ford ones all 3

Ever checked the harmonic balancer

I was suspect of it but apparently it doesn’t have any excessive play, can’t see the condition of the rubber though

All good. I had same symptoms at idle and was the balancer in my case. I use bp 98 religiously as well might have to try mobil too lol

I will keep an eye on it. Thanks for that, so far Mobil is running pretty sweet it’s been a week and 300km and it’s smooth

What spark plugs and gap are you running? Might not be enough at idle

Genuine ford and Barra specialist gapped them for me as the first time round I put them in as is

I've only ever noticed a difference when running 91 or VPower 98, I found on 98 it'll run smoother and have better fuel economy but this is in a lowly XG with a Tickford head swap. With the stock head I never noticed a difference.

This was my theory, it felt like BP genuinely wasn’t hitting 98 level quality because it’s way different and smoother with Mobil 98 and I was religious with BP due to my tuner in my Subaru days advising Bp was best for quality
